Hey all,
I'm about to buy my first all-American PRS, and I'm having a little dilemma on what pickups I should go with.
So, I will be buying a Custom 24, maybe new, maybe used, depends on how much I get for my SE 7 string (learned the few rock songs/jazz songs that use 7s, got bored) and my RG (nothing like the older ones, way too metaly, cant do jazz at all).
About my style, I mostly play modern hard rock, ex Alter bridge, Seether, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, etc. But, I also play a ton of blues rock, like the Allman Brother's Band, Hendrix, etc. I also am planning to bring this guitar to a local blues bar by me with open jam nights.
So, I need something that can do just about everything. I originally wanted the Tremonti set, but i'm sure it's a little too hot for my style. When I went to my local music store, I tried the HFS/VB combo, and they didn't do it for me. I also played a guitar with 57/08's, which I liked, but they were just a tad too fat. I prefer a more open, woody sound myself (I'm a diehard Strat guy). I like a ton of bass, a nice scoop, and not to shrilly highs (yes, I know I just basically described the Tremonti, so if the bridge can clean up, and not push my amp really hard, then I guess it's still in the running).
So, I guess my question is, would the 59/09's be a better fit for me? I've looked around for a guitar to play with them in all around, but all the stores near me just have the HFS.
If it helps, I'm playing through a Line 6 POD HD400 plugged into a Line 6 spider amp, and sometimes an ol' Roland cube (yeah, I know, probably should get something better instead of a new guitar, but once I played a core PRS, I knew I just had to have one. I'll get something better eventually)
Thanks for any and all help.

Find yourself a CE22 with dragon 1 pickups or a prs with 5909 and you should be happy. I have both and cant decide which is my favorite.

Thanks gush, I'm quite sure I would be pretty happy with the 59/09 set, but I still am not sure whether to get those or the 57/08's
So, how does the bass end in the 59/09 compare to the bass end in the 57/08. I was definetly digging the 57/08's, besides the thickness (as I said, more of I'm more of an open/scooped sounding guy). The bass end seemed to be nice and tight, very responsive. Is the 59/09 the same way? How do the EQ curves compare between the too? Honestly, I'd probably be fine with either or, but I am that guy who tries to go for something as close to my tastes as I can get.

Hi guys I just received a message from Wild Wet Guitars that my custom 24 PRS custom made for me just arrived, which is really amazing I will post pics later. I made it posible through my dealer at Wild West Guitars with my friend Doug Diamond. I have 6 Custom 24's , 4 made special for me, and all of them are stuffed with 59/09, which I Iove for their heaviness, I a m a metal player; I play a Diezel VH4 Head, and everything sound pretty cool on my other guitars. On this guitar I just changed pickups for the sake of knowing a different sound, I was and still a very Les Paul kind'a guy, I like fat and mid sound, so the riffage and the percussiveness of the right hand pick, cuts trough the scooped mix of my Diezel Head. I found that the 6th string with 59/09's is a little flabby or with more bass compared to my Les Pauls, which is not a big deal 'cause I can fix it with less bass on the amp's EQ.

On this new Guitar, which has a Rosewood top, and a rosewood neck, and a mahogany body, my thoughts were; "well if the 57/08's are kind of a Paf, they might sound a little tighter and focused" Just like a Les Paul, but I am afraid they might not be as heavy or strong for metal, are they not?, I am a metal Head and Hard Rock player in a band in Mexico.

I will pick my guitar maybe in 15 days from now, but save me the suspense....

So am I ok? Can I sound metal with the 57/08's? Thanks Brothers.

He speaks the truth. Either work beautifully to suit your style...Dragon I's for more CHUGGA. Keep an eye out, they pop in and out every now and then.

Sadly, I don't own a guitar with 5708s yet. I have played them a couple of times though. Enough to know I want them but not enough to give you an acurate comparison. The 5909s are just plain wonderful pickups and I can't say enough good things about them. I think the bridge is about 9.3 res which is about where I like my bridge p-up to be. The 5 way blade gets you great tone options but once in a while I wish I could split the bridge for some twang, rolling back vol pot kinda gets there. From what I have read on here it seems the 5708s are not quite as hot as 5909s. FWIW I put a 5909 in bridge of my McCarty and it sounds fabulous. The first time I gigged with it I was reminded of a LP that a friend of mine had only it would stay in tune.

I have driven this into the ground but I'm going to say it again. CE22 , dragon 1 and rotary is a combination that blows my mind! I purchased this guitar cheap and it is beat a little but it has changed what I browse for on line now. Dragon 1s are high output but don't act like high output. Positions 2,3 and 4 are really nice. Worth checking out.

Thanks everyone, I've decided that I'm going to go for the 59/09's while still looking for a CE 22 with Dragon I's if I can find one. The 59/09's have that extra touch of heat and brightness, while still being able to sound clean. Also, after listening to some Dragon I's, I'm in love with them. They can chug, but also be very clean. Thanks gush for turning me onto those. I would have just dismissed them because they're wound so hot, but they can really sound clean. Again, thanks all for the help.
