Only one of my guitars has a middle pickup and it drives me crazy that after years of trying not to hit it, I keep striking the middle pickup with my pick. At this point I'm fed up and feel like selling/trading it. Is there an easier fix?

Play foreword about an inch so the pick falls between the neck and middle pickup.

My problem is more so with my middle finger, since I hybrid pick a lot. On a Strat, I generally adjust to play either side of the middle pickup, but that's got to be tough on the Studio given the size of the pickups .

That's all technique. Try:

1) Playing in between the pickups as aforementioned. Sometimes it helps to develop a touch reference somewhere on the guitar to help make locating that position easier, like with your thumb.

2) Develop a shallower pick stroke. I used to dig like I was mining for gold early in my playing, and while it can sound really good, you can achieve the same dynamics be redirecting your picking energy across the string as opposed to underneath it. Plus, since I've become a softer "picker", I don't break strings nearly as much. In the early years, I'd break a string every week. Now, I break one every 4 years or so.

Been dealing with that for years. I gave up, said F it, and just plow right through now.

Yes, send it to me. I don't have an issue with this on my NF3. If I don't have an issue with it on this guitar either, then clearly it was meant for me.

I've had middle pickup guitars over the years on and off, so it doesn't really bother me. I hammer the strings, but I guess I've never
had an overly deep pick stroke. I guess I developed that years ago when I used to pick right over the bridge pickup a lot anyway.

My wife might says I developed the short stroke tendency another way... errrr.... what??? aCk!!! o_O:eek::confused::D:p:cool:

I have three PRS guitars with 3 pickups: a PS 408 Studio, a Special Semi-hollow and an NF3. I hit the middle pickup on all three. While, like I said and everyone knows, you CAN adjust your technique. But hell if the 2HB on the 594 (or insert core PRS here) doesn't feel footloose and fancy free. The thing that attracts me to your SAS is the Swamp Ash/Maple recipe. How hot would that be on a PRS??? You could always pull the middle pickup and rewire your guitar....

OP Ive been dealing with this forever as well, on a Strat I lower the pup not sore if you can do that on the SAS, but its a common problem...

Seriously, you move your pick position a tiny bit for leads, where you might be anchoring more. For rhythms, where your wrist is more free, it shouldn’t be a thing. I guess... unless you’re whacking the strings and your rake angle is “scratch the body every pick stroke” low. IDK... I didn’t have a problem adjusting to this when I got my NF3... just so loved the tones I adjusted.

What everyone else said. I had a main guitar for many years that was HSH, and I always hit the middle pickup. I just lowered the middle pickup and soldiered on.
