So another race weekend is in the books: CMRA Rounds 1&2, and WCC rounds 3&4. Events were at Rocky Mountain Motorsports facility just north of Calgary AB. I didn't place at all, but there's no pieces to fix and no drops or incidents so that is really all I shoot for: to finish with the rubber side down. My times did improve each race and was smoother with better body position on the bike. RMM is such a gorgeous track, but actually racing there is a different thing than just running a recreational day. It's even more fun to run it when you're racing!!
First race I was P5 on the grid, but I was nervous as Hell, and got a horrible launch, most of the pack went by me by turn 3. The rest of the races went by lap times and finishing positions and I started farther back. Which is fine since most of them are faster and they would mostly leave me behind by the end of the first lap anyway. That leaves me and the rest of the slower riders to run our own races without hindering the fast riders that are trying to advance into higher categories. And they are usually the ones that exceed either tire/traction or their own limits and suffer the spills for it. Not that it doesn't happen to any/all of us at any given time...
The fellow in the orange and black suit is my buddy Rob Darlington and the lovely lady is his wife Shelly. He's the guy that is mostly responsible for my spending as much or more money riding track and racing than I do on guitars and gear in the last 10 years. OK, it's a choice but still I can blame him being as he can't defend himself right now.
CMRA (Calgary) is a provincial associate of our EMRA (Edmonton) Motorcycle Racing Association and our two local clubs link up with WCC (Western Canada Championship) 3 times a year and this was their second Alberta stop for 2024. The final will be in Mission BC in early October.
These photos were all taken by my good friend Patrick Lambie who is the Editor in Chief of Inside Motorcycles (Canadian publication) and he was there in official capacity covering the race rounds. Patrick also rides control for the Calgary based HardNox Track Dayz track club that Rob owns. Patrick and I met when I was a Honda Dealer working the show Circuit with Honda Canada. We both got our race licenses the same year at the same school in Edmonton. Although given that he gets to travel all over the world and ride all the cool manufacturer stuff on all the famous and world renowned tracks, he's significantly better and faster than I am (my story and I'm sticking to it haha).
