Approaching AVX (Catalina) airport. A short 3000' field with steep drop-offs on each end of the runway resulting in downdrafts on short final approach, just before landing, when the wind is blowing. When I was flying in the 80's there was a big black burn area past the SW end where a Learjet didn't make it.
I was only riding in co-pilot's seat for this approach. If I'd had to take over the plan would have been: divert to LGB (Long Beach) for Runway 30: 10,000', wide as a freeway with flat land all around. And declare an emergency for a first ever landing in a high performance twin engine aircraft that's way more complicated than a simple fixed gear, fixed pitch propeller, single engine Cessna.

Met Mark Morton from Lamb of God on Tuesday. He’s out doing a book tour and wound up having a signing close to me. I had preordered the book and canceled it once I found out about the signing. It was actually cheaper to get the book at the store and meet him!
