Hello fam. I recently got a Hollowbody II. It is equipped with Phase III locking tuners. First want to say that I think the tuners are amazing. The design and the ease of use is really incredible (to the point where I was nervous when I first restrung it because of how easy it was - seemed to good to be true).

My question is related to the tuners because I have owned the guitar for just a couple weeks and it is staying tune well for regular type playing. I play a lot of blues music and I am a big string bender so I wanted to put the tuning stability to the test in the early stages of the guitar's life. I did some bends that exceed a whole step and I noticed that whenever I bend my high e and B strings up a whole step and a half and also 2 whole steps, the strings go slightly flat. This is excessive bending and I only do it once in a while but I am wondering if I pre-wind a string once around the tuning peg before I lock the tuners if this would help. I have little experience with these kinds of tuners so I want to make sure that this is not frowned upon or going to damage the tuners in any way. Thanks.

Check this Thread out. A lesson from the Master.

Hello and welcome. If the strings were snagging in thé nut slots they would most likely go sharp when returning from the bend. New strings will return noticeably down pitched when you bend them. They need stretching a bit. What I do is tune up in pitch say a whole tone and give them a good few hard strums. Then I adjust to my standard or regular tuning.

My view is, stretching strings with your fingers by pulling them away from the fretboard or making lateral S shapes will likely lead to deformations in the string, and intonation problems.

As much as I like the phase III and PRS original locking tuners, standard posts with a lot of wraps (done correctly) are a little more stable for excessive bending from my experience.

What Charlie said. If you were old, you'd know - stretching is your friend (you'll find out some morning!).

I've had no tuning stability issues with the locking tuners (any type) as long as a) they're locked sufficiently; and b) they're stretched sufficiently.

My experience has been pretty much the same. Just have to watch that break angle with tilted back headstocks :-)

Charlie agrees because he is old too. Longing for the day when strings come pre-tuned in the packet.
