Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum.
I plan to buy a PRS guitar very soon.
I have very small hands and I was wondering if the Pattern vintage neck of a McCarty 594 is going to be an issue for me.
I know it's quite personal and I would have like to try one but unfortunately I cannot find a shop near me with one.

So any advice experience would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

“Small” is a relative term, so it’s hard to say. Consider that many females with very small hands compared to their male counterparts have played on guitar and bass necks of all sizes. Watching someone like Marta Altesa do what she does on a 5 string bass neck will give you an idea.

That said, there are thinner necks and different radius necks to choose from on other models. Is there a particular guitar you’re very comfortable on? That might give some indication of what you like.

It really just boils down to what feels best in your hands. Make your reservations known to the retailer and see what they have to say. And purchase from one with a excellent return policy just in case.

Only one way to know for sure, but...

Have you ever played a PRS with the Pattern neck profile? Pattern Vintage isn't majorly different. It's subtly more V shaped in the palm.

I feel like it is easier to play a bigger neck ( thicker front to back ) with small hands.
You don't have to curl your fingers/palm as tightly , also easier to have you thumb on the back of the neck more.
I have a bigger issue with wider neck ( like some gibsons ) the ones that feel like a classical guitar , super flat radius it also tough for me.

Thank you so much for all your answers.

I do agree that I need to find a retailer where I can try it by myself to see how it feels in my hands.

I have never played a PRS. I have a Les Paul. It is a R0 reissue and I like it very much. The scale is also fine for me.

I'll let you know my opinion as soon as I can get my hands on a 594

I can tell you the 60's slim on my LP is thinner then my wide thin on my CE24. The width is about the same, but the PRS is is fuller and more rounded at the back.

If you don't have access to a PRS locally your best bet may be to read up on the specs of different neck patterns, try an educated guess, and purchase from a retailer that allows returns.

You can geek out on stats all you want but i think it just needs to be in your hands.

can you post a pic of the hands?

Have you considered surgery? They’re doing wonderful things with hand jobs now!

Pattern vintage shouldn’t be an issue. I’m pretty neck-agnostic, but the pattern vintage works well for me. And one of my friends says I have “Billy Barty hands”.
