Hiya!

I've been looking at tons of mod videos and different ways to wiring pickups, which got me thinking about sound on the guitars I have. Has anyone done an out of phase mod on the Custom Special 22? I wasn't able to find anything but my googling could just be faulty. So figured I would ask this great forum!

Thanks

It would be easiest to make the Narrowfield out of phase with a push/pull based on standard diagrams out there. Not sure how much use it would be, but it might be fun. It'll give you out of phase in 2 and 4.

I personally would rather add a switch to get the neck/bridge combos. You can do a bridge (or neck) on switch to get neck/bridge or all three pickups at once. Or, my favorite is a super switch with a push/pull that alternates position 3 between middle pickup and outside pickups.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with how things are suppose to be wired just yet, so forgive the stupid question if it is. Could you use a push/pull volume and tone pot to get out of phase from neck/bridge?

You only need one switch. If you reverse the phase on one and then reverse the phase on the other they're back in phase.

Right, but I would want to have it either neck out of phase or bridge out of phase. So would need something to be able to do that for each. Seems like I would still need to add another toggle, maybe a 3 way mini to accomplish this. Honestly, probably won't do that to this guitar as its so precious hehe

Out of phase with that though?

If you did the phase switch on the middle pickup then you have the option for the middle/neck in phase or out of phase AND the middle/bridge in phase or out of phase.

But you wouldn't have the out of phase double humbucker (middle position). If you did either the neck or bridge, you would have the out of phase option with either the Narrowfield or the other humbucker. For example, if you added the out of phase option to the neck Pup, it can still be in/out of phase with the NF or the Bridge PU.

If I were to consider any mods to mine, I think I would add some way to switch between the two humbuckers and the single Narrowfield in the middle - basically the same type of Mod I would add to my 509. The main difference in the selection option is that in the middle position, the 509 just has the middle SC where as the Special has both Humbuckers so I would and a push/pull that switches between both humbuckers or just the middle pick-up on both of these guitars.

Hmm, thanks for all the input thus far! This gives me some options to think about. I'll post again if I decide to go that route, just kinda looking over my options.

I didn't think the Special had both humbuckers in position 3, but, oops, I guess it does.

So then just replace either the volume or tone pot with a push/pull pot. You would re-route the wires that go from the center lugs of the mini toggle of one pickup (doesn't matter which) to the center lugs of the push pull. The bottom lugs of the push/pull go back to switch/ground (where the original wires ended up). Then you jumper across the switch in an X pattern.

This will give you out of phase in position 3 and 4 (or 3 and 2, depending on which you put out of phase) when you pull the switch.

That's my favorite wiring for a three-pickup guitar.

Couldn't you replace the mini toggles with 3 position ones ( possibly a DPDT )? so one position would be your out of phase .
On my project narrow field I used Push Push pots on the Vol and tone to do Out of phase.

I had considered that as an option as well. Not sure what would be easier, replacing toggles or pots?

You won't be able to do phase via three-way toggles with the multi-tap pickups. They already need all 6 lugs for tapping.

Replacing either the tone or volume pot with a push/pull is the best bet and totally reversible.
