Hi everyone,

I have my eye on a '07 513 and I'm curious about the dimensions of the neck. I'm struggling to find the right info online and I'm not in a position to try this or any other 513 in advance, so I have to go by the numbers. I currently own a CU24 with a pattern thin neck, and used to own a DGT.

How would the original 513 compare to these? I know it's not a pattern neck, but if anyone has specs or comparisons I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

The 513 had its own neck carve and frets then, termed the 513 neck carve. It was most similar to the wide fat neck carve, though a touch narrower at the headstock end. This was eventually worked into what is called the pattern neck now, though I don’t know if those guitars from the first 4-5 years are the same as the later ones. They had other differences like a scalloped nut that you can visually distinguish from later models. The 513 inlays were also only on this model. From the website:

“513 ROSEWOOD: 2004 - 2006. Carved maple 10 top, mahogany back, Brazilian rosewood neck and fretboard, 22 (513 fretwire) frets, 25 1/4” scale, 10” radius, 513 neck carve, 513 gold mother of pearl bird inlays, Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay with inlaid gold mother of pearl signature, tremolo bridge, new grommet version of the PRS phase II locking tuners, 513 pickup system.

513: 2006 - present. Same as 513 Rosewood, but with a mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard.”

There is a article from that time frame, with many details from PRSh, at: https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/prs-513-26606

I have two 2007 Brazilian necked 513s, and they are incredible instruments. It’s not everyone’s thing, but if you like them you will probably like them a lot!

I don't own a 513. I didn't even give them a thought until I played a 509 and fell hard. My question is the same, what's the neck carve? I've read the above article and model breakdown saying one thing but the sales specs on the dealers and ads say pattern regular. Did they change it during the run? Is 513 and pattern regular the same? I think that may be what @RickP is saying above?

Here's Sweetwater for reference but you can chose about any of them.

Hi,

They defintely changed from 513 neck to pattern regular. I'm open to correction on this but I think when they switched to patern regular they changed the birds to regular birds as well which is a good indicator.

Thanks everyone,

So it sounds like the closest neck was the old wide-fat, but that it tapered more at the nut.
Looking at this site: https://www.mooreguitars.com/prs-neck-profiles/, the only difference between wide-fat and pattern-thin is that wide-fat is 2/32" deeper in neck depth at the nut, as well as the additional .25" in scale length. That's re-assuring as my main concern is about neck width, depth doesn't bother me so much.

This is correct. I'll chime in some additional points. The neck definitely feels smaller than wide fat. I have a rosewood (well kingwood but similar enough) necked PS with wide fat and the 513's neck just feels slightly smaller and narrower. The other thing to note is the finished or unfinished neck also makes a difference, with the finished neck (i.e mahogany neck) feeling a smidge bigger. Overall its a great goldilocks neck, if more catered to the traditionalists. I can't envision anyone disliking it

The neck profile of 513s changed over the years.

513s in the period 2004-10, which consists of the models 513 RW, 513 (with mahogany neck), 513 25th Anniversary, 513 Swamp Ash, had - common saying - a 513 profile. Which was declared as WF on the hang tags.

The second period is as of 2011 until 2016's end of production, the model was named 513 MT. These models have Pat.Reg. profiles.

No rocket science.

My 2008 513 Mesures
1.654" width and .86" depth at the nut
2.058 width and .985 depth at the 12 fret

The width is about the same as a Pattern Reg / DGT and identical to my Fiore
The 513 is deeper than The DGT and the Wide fat by a small amount.
The Neck on the Fiore measures almost identical to my 513
