For a long time, I have had my heart set on a gold top single cut. Almost 2 years ago I was on the hunt for a G LP gold top with P-90's and lucked into a VOS 2018 SC594 in McCarty burst with P-90's. That guitar is amazing and fills my limited P-90 needs. I thought I left the gold top obsession after picking up a few additional single cuts and 3 G LP Customs. Recently, I was watching the Bad Religion COVID shows ("Decades", as the name suggests they did songs from each decade in separate shows) and several times Brian Baker grabbed an R7 with black plastics and I was triggered! It just looks so awesome.
There is something about the simplicity of an opaque top and natural back that just hits me a certain way. I started down the path of looking into R7's and I keep coming back to what lead me to my SC594 Soapy... The heritage/history angle of G does not hold much weight with me and the SC594 is the "perfect" instrument for me in this application. I do not want to fight my guitar and considering this is a hobby for me, I want a guitar that just feels perfect every time I pick it up. My LP Customs have been perfect and serve their purpose, but they are Customs, not the various R's. The SC594 never disappoints.
This brings me back to the SC594 which has not let me down so far. Each of my SC's play amazingly well and bring consistency to my playing. I see at least three options in front of me.
1. Simply buy an R7 and customize it to get the look I want, but "put up with" the neck feel, tuning stability, and general comfort issues I assign to the R's.
2. Purchase a SC594 Gold top, swap the knobs/plastics, and install locking tuners
3. Go for broke and track down a Wood Library SC594 with an opaque top and rosewood neck... I mean if we are getting creative, let's go for broke!
I have been scouring the internet for a week and it seems like opaque top SC594's are pretty rare (outside of the standard gold top) and opaque top SC594's with rosewood necks are extremely rare. Both Brians Guitars and Ish Guitars have done a few WL runs with cool opaque tops and rosewood necks. Only a few of those seem to be available, a few white tops currently on reverb.
Before I get my heart set on option 3 above, it would be helpful to understand just how rare these are. Were there any previous runs of opaque top SC594's (or other SC variations) with natural backs and rosewood necks? Am I just chasing after unicorns here or are there a few out there where I just need to be patient to see what comes along? Specifically I am trying to understand what colors people have seen (or owned) to understand if what I am looking for has already been done. Commissioning a new WL/PS guitar is not in the cards at the moment.
