Paul explains in this video how humbuckers have a rounded peak while single coil pickups have a sharper peak.

This allows the Silver Sky, Strat, Tele, NF53, etc. to be able to cut through a mix very effectively. When I play my Gibson's for blues, the round peak does not allow the lead to cut through as much as the McCarty 594. Part of the reason I would think is the brass saddles, tuning pegs for added sustain, as well as some other tweaks. . It allows the 594 to have a sharper peak cut through a song better.
My 335 has a more mellow round peak and the Les Paul a thicker one. I am not saying Gibson can't cut through in a mix, but when compared to the 594, their character stays a little back. So this is one of the reasons why I love my 594.
