OK, can anybody tell me what's up with this serial number? 6714298 I passed on a cheap ce22 this week because it had a serial number like this and I thought it was fake. This serial is from another ce22 on ebay. This number doesn't appear in the CE section on the prs web site so is it legit?

6=1996 year identifier, 7=CE model identifier, serial=14298. That fits right in with the info on the PRS support page.

I don't understand. On the PRS site they don't list CEs as having a year prefix. They list them as 7 space then serial # or CE space then serial # although 14298 puts it as a 1996 model year. So why the different number? I'm kind of bummed, I really wanted that CE. I could play CE22s all day every day.

The PRS website page for serial numbers can make it seem at first glance that only Cu24/Cu22s have the year prefix, but all of the Maryland made models have that (the SE series uses letters).

So, yeah, that was a legit CE. Don't worry, there will be another available soon enough.

Please don't think I'm trying to argue but neither of my CEs start with year prefixes. The web site suggests all CEs start with 7 then serial number then they switched to CE then serial number. What am I missing? Thanks for clearing this up.

FWIW the serial number on my 96 CE22 is 6713156 and verified by PRS customer service[/QUO

That's interesting. I wonder why they don't list that style serial number on the site. Should of bought] the dam guitar. I played my CE 22 at our gig last night and it really rocks hard. It still needs a twin though.

Serial number and year identification, from the PRS Support website. The bolded stuff is right at the top of the page, so if you skip straight to the CE section you will miss it:

All guitars and basses have serial numbers which start with a year prefix. The prefix is the last one or two digits of the production year, and it applies to all models below.

CE Models

Approximate Serial Numbers Year
7 0001 – 0270 1988
7 0271 – 1830 1989
7 1831 – 3200 1990
7 3201 – 4540 1991
7 4541 – 7090 1992
7 7091 – 8820 1993
7 8821 – 10700 1994
7 10701 – 13000 1995
7 13001 – 14680 1996
7 14681 – 17130 1997
7 or CE 17131 – 19580 1998
CE 19581 – 20749 1999
CE 20750 – 21599 2000
CE 21600 – 23199 2001
CE 23200 – 25389 2002
CE 25390 – 26399 2003
CE 26400 – 27900 2004
CE 27901 – 29377 2005
CE 29378 - 31800 2006
CE 31801 - 32783 2007
CE 32784 - 33881 2008

So your number breaks down as 6 7 14298

6 = 1996
7 = a CE model
14298 = right in the range for 1996: 13001 – 14680

As I said, if you don't notice the statement at the very top of the PRS page, you think the CE serial numbers don't have a year prefix and should start with 7 or CE.

So what do your CEs start with? From what I understand, PRS didn't vary from their numbering scheme I just posted. If they start with a 7, then they were made in 1997 or 2007, that's all. So they should be either 77xxxxx or 7CExxxxx, perhaps with spaces like 7 CE xxxxx.

Hi, New to the site and have an odd ball serial number for a potential purchase. Custom 24 With a serial number begining with the letter "R" and the first digit is "0". Ballance is four digits so (R0****). I cant work out what the R stands for as the PRS site does not mention a prefix with an R. All help is welcome.

Is it an SE model?
