Nut wear

Do you find the nuts PRS uses wear out fast? On my 2000 Custom 24 I had to replace the nut after five years
because one slot was cut deeper than the others. I lived with it until I couldn't. On my 2009 custom 22 I had to widen the slots because when I used the trem I got Ping!. Now on my 2010 Modern Eagle I have to replace the nut because one slot has worn down. The bone replacement nut on the Custom 24 has hardly worn down.
Fyi, the custom 24 and Eagle are non trem. Just unlucky or ?

When you send a PRS to the PTC for a setup, they replace the nut as part of the setup. They did on a one year old guitar I sent in for setup.
So I think the expectation is that the nuts will wear, and will periodically need replacement, even though mine certainly didn't.

The material they use is some kind of space age stuff, infused with Brass on recent models. I've never worn out a PRS stock nut since 1991, but it isn't something I'd worry about replacing. You can buy two for about twenty bucks at the PRS store, and they just snap into place as I understand it. I mean, it's not much more expensive than replacing a set of strings.

My CU24 did start having issues, but that was after several years of play. The slots were in rough shape, as were the fulcrum screws on the trem, but that's no fault of PRS, just mechanical wear from use. Held up better than the Graphtech Trem Nut I tried on another brand guitar. I wore that one out in about 6 months of pretty heavy trem use.

A good bone nut seems like it'll last forever, though. I'm not generally a fan of the softer, slippery materials because of how they wear; and they dampen the open strings a bit. But as Les mentioned, the new PRS nuts are improved and impregnated with brass. Working just great on the S2 I bought last year.

I haven't needed to replace a PRS nut in 20 years of ownership. My nuts are great!
I don't use trem guitars, so maybe that's a factor.

My 1992 Custom still has the original nut and I still don't have any issues with it.
