Nut slot question

My low E and A strings are tight in the slots of the nut and don't move freely unlike the rest of the strings. Is this normal or should the slots be opened to allow them to slide freely like the rest of them?

Open 'em.

Yes, but file carefully! You only want to widen the slot a little, not deepen it. If you cut too deep, you will get open string buzz. If that occurs, only a nut replacement can really fix the buzz.
