NUGD: 2021 Wood Library DGT!

Decided over the holidays to let go of my HBII and try out a DGT. Managed to score this beauty for a good price - my first green guitar and wood library (ebony fretboard and maybe special birds?):

Liking the control layout and the neck, but still getting used to the pickups. They’re a bit dark for my taste and have a tendency to get muddy with the profiles I like for my other PRS (with 58/15LT, 85/15, \m/, Santana). I’m also experimenting with using the volume knobs to clean things up which these pickups do really well. Any tone tips would be appreciated!
What is the name of that color? Parts of the flame on the front look like Eriza Verde, the lighter parts. The back looks almost Emerald Green.

Here’s what PRS shared with me:

“Serial# 0323753 is a 2021 Wood Library DGT, with a Flame Maple 10-top, Mahogany neck with a Grissom profile, Ebony fretboard with bird inlays, gen 3 tremolo bridge, DGT treble and bass pickups, finished in a Custom Color, with hybrid hardware. We do not have specific color information for custom colors.”

Wildwood had it listed as Eriza Verde, but they didn’t do the original wood library run. I personally think it’s just a darker-than-average variant of Eriza Verde with a stained back, headstock, and neck.

ETA: My understanding of “custom color” is just that it’s a color not typically offered for that model in particular and not something new or different than usual.

There was another green that was closer to the dark flames on the top. I am trying to remember what they called it. From what I am seeing it looks like a blend of Eriza Verde and that other green. The back to me looks a lot like Emerald Green. With a custom color it is difficult to tell for sure. It sure is pretty.

This is a little better look at the color - quite a bit of yellow in there.

Sweet score! Congrats!! My HBII WL is PRS color of Jade (which is more in the Hunter Green range - darker), but it certainly has no yellows in it. Then again, every piece of wood takes the stain differently, so that yellow may just be a byproduct of the wood imparting it's flavors into the final color. Awesome whatever you want to call the color (other than green)!!! They also used to do Emerald which may still be available for WL runs, custom colors or PS builds. When I look at it, I am calling it Eriza Verde (and maybe that color was not offered on the DGT in 2021 which would make it a "custom color").

For any other new DGT owners who stumble on this thread thinking the guitar sounds too dark or muddy, make sure you set the pickups to factory specs first before tweaking. I falsely assumed that had been done since the store I bought it from did a set-up and I was making tweaks from there, but the factory specs are a much better baseline to start from. I’m actually a little surprised how low the pickups are sitting in their rings with factory specs. Now I’m really enjoying the sounds I’m getting!

sometimes when your ears are closer to the level of the speaker while sitting, it's shocking how awfully bright one's settings actually are.

That's one reason amps sound different miked up; the speakers are very directional in the higher frequencies, and you're hearing something different from when you're standing in a room; standing up, you're mostly hearing reflections instead of direct signal.

So if you haven't tried sitting with your ear closer to speaker level, i.e., closer to the floor, it might be worthwhile to see if that's a thing.
This is an under-appreciated point, I think. I need to alternate my playing time between standing and sitting (too long of either and physical issues get to be too much). I actually got a higher stool so that when I'm sitting, my ears are still at the same level as standing because sitting lower to the ground my tone is too bright, but just perfect when standing

I get it, and saving your ears from your own excesses (goodness knows I have mine!) is always a good idea.

What I've learned from recording is that if your tone is too bright sitting, it's too bright for any other purpose - - recording, gigs or jam sessions.

And maybe even playing at home if other people are around. But I digress...

I have to remind myself of this often, by the way, because setting up my amps I'm usually standing, and my tendency is definitely to dial things in a little too bright!

Worse, once it's dialed in too bright it's hard to go back; the ear wants to hear more of the sizzly stuff once you start off that way.

Definitely - but it works for me since my days of recording are in the past, and I'm just playing along to songs these days, strictly for my own entertainment.
Although when I did used to record, I would occasionally go for 1 mic right up close and a 2nd more ambient one up in the room. Not for every single track, but a cool variation from time to time

Whatever works, works!

For some reason I can't create music unless I think I'm doing it for some professional purpose. I have representation in Asia now, we'll see how that goes.
