I've been looking around, found a few examples of the NOS (late eighties) Korina McCarty issue. What is the general thought on the korina vs. the standard mahogany/maple ones ? Having only played a Custom 24 core model, I'm a "virgin" on the McCarty. What is the McCarty pickup like compared to the newest 58/15, 59/09 recent issue.

I'm thinking the Korina McC might be a better step up from my SE ZM than to be looking at S2 models.

thanks in advance.

Awesome guitars. I'd definitely get one if you're in the market. Braz boards on the one's at Dave's...not sure if all are? Pretty similar to a McCarty standard. Just a little brighter in the mids and a bit snappier and lively. It's been a long time since I played thru the pickups, so I won't try to go there.

I just gave mine a workout this morning. Such a great guitar. I have a dog's breakfast of PRS PS to play and that NOS McCarty Korina is one of the best, and one I go to often.
The moment I bought it I had visions of swapping out the pickups. The rep at Dave's guitar said, give it a try first, I think you will like those McCarty pickups in that guitar. He was right, no way I would swap out the pickups, I don't know how a change would improve this guitar. vchizzle said it best brighter in the upper mids, snappy, full of sizzle. I have guitars with 59/09s, 58/15s, etc...all I can say is that the McCarty pickups in THIS guitar a have full, fat sound, no ice pickiness, they accentuate the bright upper mids and have a pleasing bite.

I saw Leslie West play Mississippi Queen on a bill with Jefferson Airplane in 1969.

This was in ancient days before any of you were even conceived, of course.

Now get off my lawn.

FYI, the McCarty model wasn't released until 1994. The NOS McCarty models you're seeing are typically 2007 models that didn't leave the factory till 2012/21013 until they could get the CITES paperwork in order.

I was 2 in '69 so,:tongue:. And, if I recall correctly, in some thread you said you live in a condo, so that lawn is common property! :star:

Yeah, I missed that "late 80's"part. It's a 2008...

There were more than a few sold before the BRW issue that took a few years to sort out. I got mine when they first came out...

Plus, it was only the first 150 or so that had the BRW fingerboards. The also made them with IRW boards...

I had a beautiful 2009 Korina McCarty in tobacco burst, Birds, BRW fretboard, gold hardware, and 59/09s. That guitar sounded AMAZING in the bridge position. But the neck pickup was muddy as all get out. I tried and tried, but couldn't dial that mud out of the tone. Ended up selling it. Looking back, I should have swapped a 57/08, or waited a year until the 53/10s showed up, and tried one of those in the neck.

Well, being 2 in 1969 still means you're pushin' fifty, so in rock and roll terms you're past it. ;) Like me. Once you're past it, you're past it. At that point, age is merely an incidental detail.

Actually, since staring down the barrel of the alternative to being old this summer, I've decided that being old beats being dead by several miles.

And being my age means I don't care who owns the lawn, as long as I don't have to mow it.

Then again, I had a house for nearly 30 years and never mowed that lawn, either (had a lawn service company do it). Hell, it was a big lot.

OH MY GOD.....the walls are crashing down around me....I'm old?!?! When the he11 did that happen?! I'd better buy another guitar! Thanks for the enabling push. I owe you one!
