Not to dig up and beat a dead horse, but for some visual evidence of what is going on:

So here is a Reverb listing for an SE Santana. Note that the flame disappears on one side or the other depending on angle of photo and lighting, yet in the majority of straight on shots appear to be quite nicely bookmatched.

Looks good straight on, lots of ambient light.

The bass side disappears from a low view, same ambient lighting:

And the treble side disappears in what appears to be direct indoor lighting:
