Hi all. So after being around for a bit I'm posting a NGD for my first PRS, a used Mira (the older version). It's out for delivery now and, even if it arrives before I head into work, it's 4 degrees so I'll need to wait a while to open it. I'm really looking forward to this, so I thought I'd jump a bit with my NGD thread.

Anyway, I saved the seller's photo. Not a great image but here it is:

Congratulations in advance! Beautiful color, and really like it with the black pickup rings.

Love those original Mira's! That wait is the worst, especially when it's on a truck in the great white north for a few days. I know that drill.

Thanks, everyone.
Well, I got home to a nicely acclimated box and quickly opened it up. It's in very nice shape. It's obviously been played, especially at the first few frets and has a few marks but all in all, nice shape. So I cleaned it up, restrung it and set to playing. My first, late night impressions:
- The string tension is a lot lower than I'm used to. (I used 10s) I'm used to 25.5" scale but do have a short scale Hamer Artist. Compared to my other guitars it feels a bit like I'm cheating with this one, as it's almost too easy to play. (I initially felt that way with the Hamer, but the Mira may be even easier).
- The pickups (or combination of pickups and guitar) are brighter than I expected. My only other humbucker guitar is the Hamer, which has Duncan Seth Lovers, and the Mira's pickups are considerably brighter. In fact, I think they may have brightness and clarity closer to my single coil guitars. (I did not have the coils split). Overall so far I think I may like this, as I've kind of wanted more single coil clarity without the hum.
- Dang it's light.
- I'll need to experiment a bit more, but I'm a little mixed on the clean sound. It's bright with good note definition, but my Hamer and G&L ASAT may have a little more oomph.
- I'm really liking the crunch to saturation sounds. I may have gotten a little carried away.

So far I'm digging it, but I'll need to spend more time with it to see how I feel about it compared to the others. I'm feeling a little guilty as it's my fifth electric, and I'm thinking I shouldn't have that many. (Affording them, thankfully, isn't an issue, but spending a few years as a cash-challenged music major/jazz saxophonist leaves an impression). I'll also have to wait for more neighborly hours to plug it into a tube amp.

Anyway, thanks again.

Coincidentally, I decided to try out the D'Addario NYXL strings and put a set of 11-49s on my '07 Mira earlier this week. Not only do I think 11s (vs 10s) in general add some beef to make up for the brighter tone, but the NYXLs surprised me by adding warmth to the Mira, which is not what I expected. I run 11s on anything at 25" scale or lower, and given your observations maybe it's worth a try?

FWIW. Great guitar -- enjoy! :top:

For what it's worth... I recently picked up a DGT bridge humbucker, which is my favorite bridge pickup, and just for grins I installed it in my Mira just to see how it would sound. I also have a DGT bridge pickup in my Custom 22. There is a noticeable difference between the tones coming out of the two guitars, despite the identical bridge pickups (adjusted to be as close as possible) and volume/tone pots. The Mira is brighter toned, and has additional clarity. The Custom brings the Beef.

Here's a sound test.

kbprs - Thanks. I was thinking about trying 11s on it and haven't tried the NYXLs.

John Beef - Thanks and that's a great clip. I'm a little surprised the all mahogany guitar is brighter; maybe it has something to do with the thinner body.

I wound up spending a lot more time with it last night/early this morning and am liking it more. By the way, it's a 2008.

I also forgot to mention: last year I moved the original round-bobbin Mira pickups and bridge onto a PRS SE Korina Singlecut, and put in new square-bobbin Mira pickups and a new stop-tail from the PRS store into the Mira. The newer stoptails are machined to a better level but if there was a tonal difference it was subtle. The new Miras seemed slightly warmer than the '07s. Just for the sake of full disclosure. :)

Thanks.

As an update, I happened to think that what I'm hearing seemed like a very strong fundamental and not a lot of harmonics, so when I got home I took a closer look at the pickup height and saw the bridge was very close to the strings. So I lowered it, adjusted the neck pickup a bit and got a much improved sound, harmonics and everything. Since I have to be neighborly late at night I had the volume very low but then realized I had just been playing it for about an hour and having a great time.
