Looking at maybe getting this as my first PRS. What do you think? I'm told it's a 1993. Not sure what the top color is. Looks natural or amber maybe, but there's red under the knobs like it has faded? Also never seen this color with black back. Otherwise looks great I think.

Looks like maybe it was stripped and refinished? Either that or the finish faded, sometimes you see a little of the old around the knobs and switch. Either way, it’s odd, in a super badass kind of way. Do it!

The only reason I haven't jumped on it yet is that I would have to trade this beauty! I know it's a fair deal but I'm on the fence:

I have this up for trade on Craigslist and a CE24 is not really what I was looking for BUT this one definitely has me super interested. Especially how clean it is for a 25 year old guitar...

So would! That thing looks boss. Black back would be correct. I'm in the "it's been stripped, or faded like a mo-fo" crowd. Either way, I'd let that thing eat crackers in my bed 24x7!

No sympathy.....make the trade! :D

yeah that looks like a refin which makes it worth less money. But it's probably worth a bit under $1k I would think. I don't know what your guitar would be worth though. If I was buying a 90's CE with cash I would buy another with an original finish first unless this was $800 or $900. Then I might do it.

I wonder why there would be red under the knobs if it were refinished?

DIY job? didn't bother to take out pots? or possibly couldn't sand well in those rounded out areas. a 93 could fade but I think there would be still red in between grain or deep into soft grain on the top. This one is too uniform except in hard to sand areas which makes me think it was a diy refin.

Those lines are super clean around the maple top, though. Looks like way too good of a job to leave some old finish left over. But I do agree with you the rest of the guitar doesn't look like it has faded. Unless maybe it started as an amber/orange color?

Could’ve been purple, Mother Nature hates blue.

I think if it is faded, due to the condition of the rest of the guitar it was probably deliberately faded (UV lamp, laying in the sun, etc).

Possibly. Just trying to think of what colors from that time period that would’ve had black backs.
