Well, I sold of my beloved Music Man Y2D last week in order to buy a new guitar. It's always a risk, selling one to pay for another that you haven't tried... but I felt confident that the brand I was buying wouldn't let me down. And I was right.

Yup, it's ANOTHER PRS!

My CE24 more than sold me on PRS as a whole, so I figured I could get something LP-esque from them. As much as I love the way LP's sound, I HATE the way they play. Don't get me wrong, I can totally rock the balls off of one, but it's just not comfortable for me at all. Maybe I've just not found the right one yet. Anyway, in the mean time, I got another PRS. Interestingly, it's not incredibly different from my CE24. The main difference is the 25" mahogany set neck over the 25.5" maple screwed on neck, and a wraparound bridge over a vibrato bridge. But those differences are huge in terms of the end product.

Beyond that, this guitar is just better. I hate to admit it, but it is. It's a damn fine instrument. I can't even really believe how good it is. It may be the best playing guitar I've ever owned. The neck plays incredibly fast. I don't know what shape it is, but it's nice and fat, a nice change of pace for me. Most all of my guitars up to this point have had necks on the skinnier side. It will take some getting used to, but I like it. The intonation is spot on with 11's, and the action is low without being too low, and with no buzz. A+

It sounds good with the stock McCarty pickups, but I've got a set of Whole Lotta Humbuckers that will really make this guitar scream. (Those pickups are actually why I got the guitar, I won them and needed something to put them in) The coil split positions sound really nice. There's a great amount of versatility in this guitar considering how simple it is. Oh and for those keeping track, this is my third PRS in as many months. It will be my last for a long time, though.

Anyway, on to pictures! The top on this guitar - which is a single piece, by the way - is on the subtle side when you're looking right at it, but from the side it really comes alive. I tried to capture that, but I'm no photographer.

And a PRS family shot, just for fun:

Sweet! Yeah, that's what the McCarty was all about originally. Subtle good looks, classic tones. I was a little sad when they started blinging them out with birds and fancy tops. Part of me still wishes they let that be their closest thing to a Les Paul instead of releasing the Singlecut.

I know the feeling with Les Pauls. They just don't work for me.

The CE and McCarty are both 25" scale, by the way. The McCarty neck profile is Wide/Fat vs. the Wide/Thin on the CE24.

Sweet guitar! The McCarty is simply a classic. I should caution you though. If you're after "Les Paul", but don't like playing one, you HAVE to try a Singlecut of some sort. Enjoy!

Thanks guys! Much appreciated. I do have one question though - anybody have any tips on cleaning up the bridge? Since I'm putting new pickups in it, I want to bring the bridge back to its original luster.

Blue Magic metal polish. But that nickel plating will develop a certain patina anyway.

Brad is on to something. I've been coming around to Singlecuts lately. They balance better than an LP, and many of them have the longer-than-LP 25" scale.

From the PRS Support Site, Care and Cleaning:

"We use a nickel/silver combination to plate our hardware. While this plating does not wear as well as chrome plating, the tonal qualities of nickel/silver are far superior.
We have found that Blue Magic Liquid Metal Polish works very well in removing tarnish from our nickel hardware. Other mag wheel polishes also work well. These products can be found at most auto parts stores."

As for me and my McCarty, I bought and used the Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream Jar, 7oz size with fantastic results on the pups and bridge.

I bought some Blue Magic. It should be here Wednesday, which is perfect as that's the day I'll be changing pickups so I can clean the bridge then too.
