Hello all,

I recently found a 97 McCarty Trem. Awesome guitar. I had it PTCed and it is just perfect.

So, about 2 weeks ago, I'm killing time on Reverb, and I come across a McCarty Standard. For whatever reason, I looked at it, and it had a trem. I thought "that would be a nice compliment to my maple-top McTrem"

Then I thought, I don't have a all-mahogany bodied guitar...so this will be a good fit in my collection.

When I looked at the seller's photos, I initially thought "oh, I'll have to get the logo on the headstock replaced", but looking closely, it wasn't damaged, it was a personal signature, not a logo decal.

So....a McCarty Standard Trem, 1995, with a personally signed headstock...

The pickups looked rough. The neck p/u faded, the bridge was uncovered and beat up. I figured at worse, I'll try and find some McCarty pickups and get it back to "stock"

Well....I bought it and exchanged a few emails with PRS as to its history....because.....

When I opened up the bridge pickup cavity, the pickup had a HAND-WRITTEN sticker on it "David Grissom" as well as a remark "see Joe K."

Pictures will be forthcoming...but it would appear I purchased a guitar BUILT FOR DAVID GRISSOM!!

You could knock me over with a feather when I read that!

All I was wanting was a Standard so I could play some SG-like tones. I liked it because it had a trem (McCarty Trems are rare...but a McCarty Standard Trem???)

And now....it's an artist's guitar?

I have no idea if Grissom actually played it, or if it was prepped for him or what.....

It's a 1995, so who knows....

Guitar find OF THE YEAR!!

I'm currently talking to the PTC on the best way to preserve its history and allow me to play it and have fun with it

I'm really excited to have it!!

Thanks for the floor...

Tony

Wow what a cool story and HNGD! I'd see if I could directly contact David to see of he knows anything about the guitar. Maybe the original DGT right there.

Yeah, from what I understand, DG & PRS went through multiple iterations before they settled on the DGT, which is based on the McCarty. They also mention "20 years" -- so it sounds like you got one of the first from the prototyping era.

Nice find!

Hopefully this works properly....I don't use Photobucket that often.

These are from the original sale. I'm hoping to take fresh ones after a PTC visit.....

The bridge cavity is shown, but in case the photo is blurry, it translates to:

22,231
Vintage Cherry
D. Grissom
McCarty 22FTR
See Joe K.

As you can see, the pickup has a label “David Grissom” hand-written. The pickup is uncovered.

I wouldn't change a thing on it....except strings maybe...

I would prefer to keep it as is...but it just looks a little bit rough......I'm wondering if putting a cover on the bridge pickup would dramatically affect it?

I like the appearance of matching pickups, although I know why some players remove the cover off the treble.

I wonder if this bridge pickup is a precursor to the current DGT pickups?

Wow! That's so rad! I'm sure putting a cover on the bridge pickup wouldn't be that big a deal. You could always take it off...

I wouldn't do anything except have them paint it blue.

I would have them do a setup, clean it up a bit. The open black pickup looks bada$$.

The stars aligned for you brother, enjoy your find (let us know how she sounds)
huge congrats

So cool. I wouldn't do a thing to it either, especially if you find out it was in DG's possession and that's how he had it. I'd rock it that way for a bit and set up to taste later. Just because.

Great story! Tons of mojo there, but do what you need to do to make that guitar your own.
