As decreed by popular vote, my new-to-me 2011 JA-15 arrived yesterday:
Five and a half pounds of pseudo-archtop goodness... The guitar looks unplayed, and the case certainly hasn't seen any unloads, bandstands or green rooms... Literally flawless condition, with lovely flame on the back. Who buys these guitars just to look at them?
Currently strung with flat wound .011s, there's a big loud acoustic thump to this one; it will make a great noodle-on-the-couch-watching-TV guitar. Hopefully I'll get to use it for more than that, of course, but things have been a little topsy-turvy of late with a cross country move and whatnot, and I've only been able to play it for about 15 minutes. The 53/10s sound lovely on initial play but I'll have to spend more time with them to make an informed opinion. I want to put ebony tuner buttons on the Phase IIIs and need to get an appropriate strap, but otherwise I won't change anything for a bit, just let it settle into a North Atlantic climate and then tweak the setup to accomodate. The previous owner had it set up so that you can practically fret a note by breathing on the string, so it's an interesting change for me and work with it that way for a bit, at least until I decide how I feel about flat wounds...
I'm no jazz cat but I like to bop and funk and can wheedle a little psuedo-jazz outta my fingers if the circumstances require. I feel kind of honoured to have a guitar like this in my collection; I'm not worthy, but I'm grateful.
