It's like a 408 but plus 218... Oh well might as well use some time explaining the background behind this (I got nothing better to do!):
So I have wanted a guitar with a triple pack of 408s ever since those pickups were released on the Sig Ltd. I thought the only way to realise this idea would be to spec a private stock, I even made up my mind that I wanted an Alder body, maple top, maple neck, as a bit of a tribute to the early CEs (you can thank Sergio for that one...). Then the Brent Mason sig came out and I really wanted one, it was so close to having triple 408s that I could just "compromise" and get one of those instead. I even thought about putting a narrowfield in the middle instead of the "305", just because I thought it would a. look better and b. be a little different.
Then I got wondering if the PTC would mod a Brent Mason with a third 408, or maybe even a NF3 with triple 408s (but then it would sound just like a Brent Mason...) Then I had a bit of a lightbulb moment and wondered if they would convert a DC3 with triple 408s. It's got the Alder body, it's got the maple neck, and (yes swede71) it has a steel trem block. The steel trem block wasn't for any reason apart from it being different, I figured I could always swap it out with a regular US bridge (or a Mannmade one) at a later stage and see which one I prefered in this guitar, it was more about having the option to do it (as sourcing a trem with a steel block isn't too easy).
A DC3 conversion was so close to my PS spec that it wasn't funny, so I asked the question to Shawn and he said yes! I knew it was going to be a logistics nightmare, me being in Aus and all, so I'd have to get someone to send the guitar to the PTC (with the associated trust issues), and then from the PTC to me. In the end, David Grantham hooked me up with a really nice DC3, he sent it to the PTC, Shawn and Skitchy made it all happen, and now she's sitting next to my front door...
Why triple 408s? I wanted the flexibility of having those pos 2-4 inbetween quacky tones, full and thick neck hb lead tones, and also clear and musical treble bridge tones. I probably could have got those from a BM, but well, where's the fun in that when I can do a PTC project?
Why is it The 626? 6 pickups, 26 different pickup combos? 26? wtf? Well I got the PTC to wire in a push-pull to activate the bridge pickup, this way I can get the neck/bridge combos (like on the CU22 Soapy) and also all 3 if I so desire. I'm pretty sure 26 is right, I went through and counted them in Excel once, but then worked out the easiest way to think about it is like this:
You have every switching combo available (neck, neck/middle, neck/bridge, middle, middle/bridge, bridge, all 3), therefore there's 3 options for each pickup: humbucker, singlecoil and off. 3 x 3 x 3 is 27, but off/off/off isn't really an option, so 27 - 1 = 26. Will I use them all? Most probably not, but it will be interesting experimenting with the different combos.
