Oh God, the guitar bug is back.

After the 25th Anniversary Custom 24 I secured recently, I fell off the wagon again.

Of course this guitar is rather worth falling off the wagon for. I was always on the look-out for a PRS Hollowbody II Spruce that I could be assured on the condition off , either locally or with someone I trust. That opportunity arose when Ishibashi Tokyo (one of my most trusted dealers and I have a great contact Gohno san there as well) got exactly this. It was missing a case and had a few blemishes, but I knew that Ishibashi would always be more conservative and I was fine with the stated condition . There is a thing with guitars I procure in Japan. Even if they are imperfect, they are rather well maintained.

Initial impressions are good. Great balance. Very loud acoustically. And most importantly, sounds nothing like my 594 Hollowbody II or Archtop. A much softer attack, I particularly like how it softens the typical harshness of an unprocessed piezo. It's not a very present guitar but it sounds really good for instrumental or even vocal accompaniment applications so far.

Pictures below. And of course a Youtube video, since I am closing in on 40K subscribers. Thanks all those who watch from here. The channel really began from the PRS forum

Congrats! I will watch the video today and get the details of what you think of it. They are really good guitars. Mine has the artist grade flamed maple top on it. I am a sucker for the figured maple. I always thought the spruce was too plain looking for me but I know from acoustic guitars what it brings to the table. I am sure it rings very nicely.

Congrats, you sure have a rare one! I'm pretty sure I've never seen a spruce top model with maple back and mahogany sides before! Mine is a typical 2001 Hollowbody w/spruce top and mahogany back/sides. Even the PRS website doesn't make mention of an HBll like yours with a spruce top. Also never seen the HB 12-string either. Very cool!

McCARTY HOLLOWBODY: 1998 - Current. Also known as HOLLOWBODY - carved spruce top with carved mahogany back and sides. Hollowbody I - carved maple top with carved mahogany back and sides. Hollowbody II - carved maple top and back with mahogany sides. Hollowbody Spruce - Spruce top, mahogany back and sides, Hollowbody 12 (12 string version, maple top). All models are 1 3/4" depth at rim, 3" depth at bridge, 22-fret wide-fat mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, PRS adjustable stoptail bridge, and McCarty Archtop pickups with 3-way toggle. Piezo bridge pickup option added in 1999.

You won’t regret buying that one. I’ve sold of a lot of guitars that I never thought I would, for a variety of reasons. Both HB Spruces remain, having earned their favored status with pure musicality. I’ve seen HB I versions with the maple top only, but not a figured maple back with a spruce top. Maybe a one-off, which was more common back then from what I can tell.

I’ve always thought a guitar that sounds good unamplified was more likely to sound good amplified. The spruce tops nail that, unsurprisingly. The Archtop pickups in mine are a bit dark, so you surely want to set your amp specifically for them to get the best tones.

Sometimes something comes up that is the exception that you have to break your rules for, this is definitely one of those things!

For me it was getting that 20th anniversary special (I was supposed to be limited to 1 guitar per year)

Congrats!

a little beat but reasonable $ for a nice jazz box , with a refinish it would a lovely addition ....
