Hi guys, I hope everyone on the forum has been doing well.
I've been on a little bit of a hiatus from things in general for awhile, due to a medical emergency I had back in October of 2024. I've been getting back into the swing of things, as of lately and what better way to celebrate...New Guitar Day of course😎.
So I present to you on this post, a 2003 OG PRS McCarty.
Crazy story on this guitar. I went to buy this McCarty guitar on Guitar Center's used gear page back in October.
I ended up in the hospital the next day due to an aortic dissection, which resulted in me having to have emergency open heart surgery... I'm talking, chest cracked open, placed on the heart & lung bypass machine, body temp dropped to 34 degrees celcius, ascending aorta removed, and a synthetic graft installed in its place.
I watched this guitar sit as I was at home recovering. Unfortunately, it sold 6 weeks later on Black Friday and I was bummed.

Fast forward to last weekend. I was in my local G.C. buying strings and I stumbled upon a used PRS McCarty still on police hold. I checked the serial number from the pictures I had saved from the McCarty guitar I had been watching, last October. Surprisingly, it was the same guitar.
I guess someone had sold it back to G.C.
So I bought the guitar on the spot, and picked her up yesterday.
I have this guitar strung up with some 9.5-46's and she plays really nice! I'm really impressed with this model. She has a different feel to her compared to my OG Singlecuts. The heel is taking some getting used to compared to the other PRS's I own.
The pickups definitely a have different flavor to them. Apparently from what I have heard, the McCarty pickups were Paul's envision from this era of what a hot PAF humbucker should sound like before he designed the #7 pickups.
Overall, I'm still in awe how I crossed paths with her, months after I originally planned to buy her. I'm sure another one will eventually make it's way into my possession in the future 🤘🤘🤘

Great story. Great guitar. Hope total recovery goes well too.

I have a 2000 McCarty and I have had it since 03 or so. Gift from my wife.

5909 pickups sound really good in these McCartys. Mine has 5815LT pickups now

Take care!

I can’t say good story, given why you couldn’t buy it in October. Still, one heck of a story. I’m glad you are back! Lovely guitar for sure!
Thank you. Yeah it's definitely another crazy story to add to the book of other crazy stories I have lol. What's crazy is that I never knew I had a tear in my aorta...until I knew I had a tear.
Aw yeah!
Sorry to hear of your "event", but super happy you're on the mend!
That sir is gorgeous, congrats!
Thank you. It's all good. Things could have definitely ended up alot worse! Honestly though, when I first came around after surgery, I thought I was going to have permanent nerve damage on my left hand, b/c all my fingers were numb. It took a good three weeks to get feeling back.
Ment to be.
Glad you’re still with us!
HNMcD!
Thank you good sir!
Love it.

That’s the quintessential McCarty look IMO.
It's definitely a great sounding and playing guitar.

Never played the 58/15LT's, but I love the 59/09 pickups...especially with A4 mags installed.

Recovery has been going well. Just taking it one day at a time. Surprisingly I was healthy enough, that I didn't have to do cardiac rehab after I got released from the hospital. I also was able to get my driving privileges back a week after I got released, because I refused to take narcotics home with me. Unfortunately though, I'm still on weight restrictions, and probably will be for life. So the daughter's get to move my amps for me when I want to play one😁

Heal well , great choice , a classic beauty . McCarty's are magic I have 4 variants and still want more .. .

May I suggest a rosewood neck Mc Soapy .. they are sheer bliss .. there's a sweet red out there for reasonable ..

Congrats! That's definitely old school.

Things have sure changed from 2003 when lots of Cores came with .009s. Glad the 9.5s are going well. It's surprising how much difference that .0005 makes. In my SC Cores, I tried 9.5 but went back to 10's which are their sweet spots.
