Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you prefer!!

I had a NDG for one of my Christmas presents, a cool Gretsch Hollowbody. The wife prefaced my opening the box with "I was trying to get something you don't already have, and James (my Guitar playing Brother-in-law) said this would be cool. I got it from Sweetwater, and they said you can easily trade it in for a different one if you want"

Three questions:
- Is this a trap? ;)
- Is it wrong that I immediately went to Sweetwater to compare the price of the Gretch to a PRS SE?
- Should I keep the Gretch, or trade it on a SE 24? (No, I don't have a SE 24, mine is a Core)

If its not your thing tell them ( or her ) sit down together and pick new one ( let here pick color or something ) go for the SE hollow body :)

Congrats!

I say keep it, for a few reasons:

  1. It was a gift from your wife.
  2. Gretsch guitars are nice guitars, generally. I prefer PRS for all my electrics, basses, and acoustics, but I am currently playing a 1964 Gibson J-50 that belongs to my father-in-law because it is stored at my place, and it needed some TLC.
  3. You can always get a nice PRS later, anyway.

I would say keep it. Gretschs are cool guitars. I see no pic so I can't say but I'm not, personally, a big fan of Bigsbys (if it has one). On the other hand you can always take that off and go with a tailpiece. Right? I think. I do like hollowbodies. I do like PRS. I do like...:)

Keep it. For all the reasons already stated by others. PRS makes excellent guitars. There are other manufacturers out there that also make excellent guitars. Owning one of these in no way diminishes PRS greatness or your love for them. I can't really comment on Gretsch specifically since I don't have a "real" one. Unless you count the Gretsch acoustic resonator but that doesn't seem to be a "real" Gretsch.

If my wife ever bought me a guitar, or any piece of music gear, I’d have to be sedated and have EMS ready before opening the box, because I’d be in shock, and at risk of stroke or cardiac arrest.

This is probably why my wife buys me stuff like sweaters. It’s safer.

But if, under proper medical supervision, I were to open a box containing the gift of a guitar from my wife, I would need to keep it, if only to have evidence of the fact that it ever even happened.

I also think that you should keep it. Like said there are not many that would buy a guitar as a present so considering yourself double lucky. Very sweet wife and a new guitar. The sound of a Gretsch is really nice in my opinion.
