See, I'd just glue a thin layer of veneer to the underside of the wood before cutting the rings. That perpendicular grain reinforcement would make them much stronger.
The might work, but I haven't seen any of the (few) woodworkers crafting pickup rings do that, and I'm not bothered enough by the grain directions to try it myself. Just swapping the parts is as much as I want to do.
