The long wait just ended and my new guitar arrived! Picked up a gently used 2012 McCarty 58 in fire red burst. I never fully bonded with my CE24 and I had been casually looking around at some of the stoptail and hardtail PRS models and when this one caught my eye I had to go for it. There aren't a ton of them out there since they only made this model for a few years, but they're gorgeous guitars and the prices are far lower than the current gen McCartys.
To my knowledge, they only made this model for a few years, 2010 to 2012. It seems like they were the transition from the older McCarty model to more like what the current model is. This has the 57/08 pickups, phase III tuners, bound neck, and rosewood veneer headstock. Very similar to the current model except for the pickups and the fact that the McCarty 58 models have an artist grade top and fancier bird inlays.
It's a fabulous guitar. I love the finish and the top is really incredible. I did a setup on it to get the action and pickup height how I like them and it plays incredibly well. I really like the pickups, much more than I like the most recent 85/15s. They have a much fuller sound and aren't near as shrill and honky. Great sounds to be had in all 3 positions, both full humbucker and split.
This is also the lightest guitar I've ever owned. 7.2 lbs. It felt really strange on a strap at first because it's so light. I'm actually really curious how they keep the weight down on so many of these. Same materials as a LP and roughly the same size, but Gibson is drilling a bunch of holes in them to keep the weight under 9 or 10 lbs.
By the way, thanks to all those here who regularly contribute to the discussions. A lot of us lurk here periodically and there's a wealth of old info that's still really useful. If only the search engine didn't decide that it could ignore "58" in a search query, forcing me to page through a million regular McCarty threads.
Now for the pics!
