I have always wanted a 12 string electric. For the longest time I assumed that would be a Rickenbacker, to get those jangly Tom Petty and Byrds chords.

I have a nice 12-string Takamine acoustic, but electric guitars are different beasts, as we all know.

When I found out that PRS made 12 string electrics, I said "yes, I must get one!" I have no idea why I didn't immediately grab one, though. I guess I got distracted by all the other models. I almost bought a nice Hollowbody 12 at last year's Experience, but since I'd already picked up a Special 22 SH at the event, I thought it was pushing my luck/finances a bit.

Recently a friend/bandmate picked up a (non-PRS) electric 12-string, a Dan Electro. It was fun to play, and I realized I still had that itch for a 12-string electric.

I haunted and trolled Reverb and eBay. Saw a nice HB-12 at a good price (from Dave's Guitar, IIRC), but in a finish that was too much like PRSi already in my arsenal - I like to get something that looks different each time. I can't do that always, but there seemed to be enough banging around I didn't bite. It sold. OK, fair enough.

So I eventually bid on something on Reverb, a CU22-12 solidbody, after it had a price drop into my neighborhood of what I wanted to spend. It looked quite nice, with a 10-top quilt (not a crazy quilt, but nice enough). Good news for Sergio - I didn't get it in the end; it was blue.

So I bid on another one, in amber. Non-10 top, solid body again. It looked like an OK top, but I was prepared for it to look a bit underwhelming. But price was acceptable. And the bid was accepted!

In retrospect, I was missing a "yellow" color in my rainbow of PRSi, and I have a blue one coming within a month or so from Brian's, so perhaps this worked out "color-wise" as the universe intended!

It looks very nice here under office lights, so I can't wait to get it out into the sun! The flame shimmers as you move the guitar in the light, and at times disappears (which is how the seller's photos looked - a bit underwhelming as a static image). Depending on how you move it around, you can make most of the "dead spots" disappear.

It plays very nicely, as one would expect from a PRS. Slightly wider neck than a regular 6-string, unsurprisingly, but I adjusted quickly.

Neck has a very nice looking IRW fretboard:

Already came up with a nice chord progression / riff, might use it for some lyrics I wrote the other night!

Very nice indeed. Congratulations on the successful bid.

Btw, amber in latin was referred to as electrum (the word could be used for a gold-silver alloy as well as the hardened tree resin). Anyway, thought it might make a fun talking point that you have a 12-string electrum electric guitar.

Thanks everyone! I was unable to zip home from work for lunch (I can do that some days), and it was a bit overcast anyway off and on, so my outdoor photos may have to wait, depending on work/weather schedules.

But I'm gonna play it at tonight's band practice!

Can't you claim sickness? Acute newguitariitus or such?
hah!

Right now I'm in the middle of some fairly important work, and I have two meeting this afternoon (one essentially called by me), so while that might be tempting normally, not today...

Just an aside: You sure that’s not VY? I didn’t think Amber came with a red back and neck.
Oh, I have no idea right now - the seller (a guitar store from Texas, IIRC) stated the color as "Amber". Might have simply been a guess vs actual knowledge. I guess I need to pull the Pickups.

Hah, I did not know that! (Or did not recall knowing that...)

So I played it last night at band practice - I played no other guitar as we ran through our short set list for Saturday (charity gig, multiple bands, 30 min slot). Then the rest of the band played through songs that didn't involve me, in case I can't make it due to a looming work deadline (always good to have a back up plan).

After that one of my band mates played it. She did a cover of Summertime - a song she has played for the longest time, starting when she got her first real guitar, a 12-string acoustic. She really liked the PRS. Like, really liked it.

Because she was playing that guitar through my current pedals/amp rig (Sweet 16), I picked up my WL509 and plugged into my HXDA for a lead break. Oh, it is so handy having multiple PRSi and PRS amps in one room! My wife was playing drum at the time, otherwise she would have been on the bass (another PRSi!). Hmm, PRS needs to come out with an SE line of affordable but good bass amps...

That is killer! If memory serves, my Amber McCarty from years ago had a reddish back. Crazy that I don’t have a PRS 12.
