I have always wanted a 12 string electric. For the longest time I assumed that would be a Rickenbacker, to get those jangly Tom Petty and Byrds chords.
I have a nice 12-string Takamine acoustic, but electric guitars are different beasts, as we all know.
When I found out that PRS made 12 string electrics, I said "yes, I must get one!" I have no idea why I didn't immediately grab one, though. I guess I got distracted by all the other models. I almost bought a nice Hollowbody 12 at last year's Experience, but since I'd already picked up a Special 22 SH at the event, I thought it was pushing my luck/finances a bit.
Recently a friend/bandmate picked up a (non-PRS) electric 12-string, a Dan Electro. It was fun to play, and I realized I still had that itch for a 12-string electric.
I haunted and trolled Reverb and eBay. Saw a nice HB-12 at a good price (from Dave's Guitar, IIRC), but in a finish that was too much like PRSi already in my arsenal - I like to get something that looks different each time. I can't do that always, but there seemed to be enough banging around I didn't bite. It sold. OK, fair enough.
So I eventually bid on something on Reverb, a CU22-12 solidbody, after it had a price drop into my neighborhood of what I wanted to spend. It looked quite nice, with a 10-top quilt (not a crazy quilt, but nice enough). Good news for Sergio - I didn't get it in the end; it was blue.
So I bid on another one, in amber. Non-10 top, solid body again. It looked like an OK top, but I was prepared for it to look a bit underwhelming. But price was acceptable. And the bid was accepted!
In retrospect, I was missing a "yellow" color in my rainbow of PRSi, and I have a blue one coming within a month or so from Brian's, so perhaps this worked out "color-wise" as the universe intended!
It looks very nice here under office lights, so I can't wait to get it out into the sun! The flame shimmers as you move the guitar in the light, and at times disappears (which is how the seller's photos looked - a bit underwhelming as a static image). Depending on how you move it around, you can make most of the "dead spots" disappear.
It plays very nicely, as one would expect from a PRS. Slightly wider neck than a regular 6-string, unsurprisingly, but I adjusted quickly.
Neck has a very nice looking IRW fretboard:
Already came up with a nice chord progression / riff, might use it for some lyrics I wrote the other night!
