This is my second PRS this week! I almost pulled the trigger on one of the Sweetwater SE deals, but I held off for this. I had never heard of the guy, nor this guitar until I joined this forum a few weeks ago. As soon as I saw it, I had to have one. Just about everyone was sold out of them, but I found a dealer on ebay that was selling them for $599 on Black Friday. He had several, and I asked him to pick out his best top - may or may not have been a good idea, more on that in a few... Anyway, it arrived yesterday while I was out, so I only got to open it up this morning. It is beautiful, definitely one of the best tops I've ever seen as a veneer. I LOVE the satin neck, that's by far the slickest necks I've ever touched, and I really like the heel joint, makes the upper fret access cake. Frets appear to be perfect, baby butt smooth, quite nice for an import. This is the first SE I've ever played, much less owned.
The fit and finish seem to be very nice overall, but a few nits to pick. First, the finish looks a little hazy (cloudy) at the headstock, not sure what's going on there. Second, the body is quite the butcher's block, I think there's 4 separate pieces making up the back, and the maple cap also looks to be made up of 4 different pieces, but no joints line up on top of each other, so it should be fine structurally. The tuners aren't the smoothest I've ever seen, but I've never liked the vintage styled ones much anyway, but maybe after some use they'll get better. Finally, this has the most porous fretboards I've ever seen, looks like a sponge. Maybe some lemon oil will close them up some, it is pretty dry, too.
Other than those minor annoyances, it looks to be a keeper. On to the pics...
I like the transition from gloss to satin on the neck, very well done...
the porous fretboard....
the butcher block
finish hazing????
