I finally found a guitar I have never tried that's in good shape and at a good price - a 1990 PRS EG with 3 Fralin Domino pickups. Feels great and I like the Domino pickups for single coil sounds. I am going to try an HFS in the bridge because the bridge Fralin doesn't quite have enough oomph for solid distorted rock sounds. The single coils sound nice in the middle and neck positions.

This guitar is a bit strange, though. It has a 1990 serial number, the body style of the original EG series and non-locking tuners. However, it has the electronics of the EG II series - 3 Fralins, volume, and tone knob that pulls out to give a somewhat different sound when the tone knob is rolled down. I'm wondering if it's actually an EG3 or EG4 that was later refitted with the EG II pickguard. Maybe I'll get more clues when I take it apart to replace the bridge pickup.

I may give it a workout at tomorrow's gig if my guitar surgery tonight is successful.

Thanks everyone. I think it's Candy Apple Red which looks pretty nice under lights. I just removed the pickguard and as I expected, there are holes from the original pickguard that have been filled in. There are some other signs of hackery inside as well. So, this looks like a 1990 EG3 or EG4 that was modified with an EGII pickguard assembly.

The contour on the upper horn suggest a first gen EG
This!

Oof! And that!

Still… hope it’s fun!

Sweet, always been curious about those dominos.

Me too. They sound like single coils (which they are) but not quite as scooped and thin as the pickups in a Strat. They're brighter and thinner than humbuckers. On the continuum between Strat single coils and humbuckers, I'd say they're closer to the single coils.

Lucky lucky! I’m very jealous here. I sold a surf green one of those years ago and I’ve regretted it since. Congrats!

Thanks. Candy Apple Red is pretty damn nice, but it's a distant second to surf/seafoam.

Haven't ever heard bad things about Fralins. Those dominos sound a bit like mini-hums or even more like the PRS narrowfields. How did the HFS work out in the bridge?

Cool, unusual guitar. Congrats!

Compared to the Narrowfields, which I'm very familiar with, I'd say they're Narrowfield Ultra-Lites. Nowhere near the bass or even mid outputs of the NFs, but kinda sorta similar.

It turns out the Fralins are a different shape than a normal humbucker, so I didn't install the HFS. I don't want to modify the pickguard.
