Hello all. First post for me. Quick back story: I'm a 43 year old that has been a drummer since 13. A few years back, I pursued playing guitar. I've dabbled with the guitar since I was 12, and always had a bit of a natural knack for it, but just started taking it "seriously" a few years ago.

Since day one of playing on the reg, I have been on the quest to find "the one." During that quest, I've owned at least 6 new USA Gibsons (LPs, Juniors) and a mix of USA/MIJ/MIM Fenders (most recently a brand new '62 Jap Tele and a '52 Blonde Road Worn). My most recent Gibson was a 2014 LPJ in Vintage Burst. As with ALL of these guitars, I never really bonded. During this process, I also got a first hand look at the HUGE variation in quality control from both manufacturers, both good and bad.

Fast forward to last week. I sold my '14 LPJ (actually a very nice guitar) on Reverb. On a whim, I stopped at my local Guitar Center with the intent of maybe buying a USA Strat. As per usual, the selection sucked. Quite by chance, I got a glimpse of the salesman unboxing a guitar and putting it on display. It was a Bernie SE. I thought to myself, "that's a damn nice looking guitar." Now on any other day, I would have chalked up the SEs as just another "Epiphone-type" quality import guitar... which I typically find totally uninspiring. Yet something inspired me to test drive the Marsden.

It took a whole 30 seconds for me to realize what I had been missing. Why did I wait so long to try one of these? Why were they so far off my radar? I was stunned. Straight out of the box it had near luthier quality setup. Perfect intonation on a stopbar? Shocked. I've had problems getting $1300 Les Paul intonated this nicely. Action? Nice & low with zero buzz. Superb fret ends & leveling throughout. Fit & finish? Flawless. When was the last time I saw a flawless brand new Gibson? Maybe never. Best of all... it was priced at $456. Yes, brand new out of the box for $456 at Guitar Center. In my standard fashion, I asked if he could cut me a deal. He looked them up on the computer and said, "these are supposed to be $649... I don't know why this one is marked $456, but I can't go any lower." I was checking online prices at the same time on my phone, so needless to say, I scraped it up at $485 out-the-door with tax. I felt like I got a steal. Still kinda surprised.

Anyway... you get my point. I've joined the dark side, and I'm never going back. I'll probably do a NGD post soon, but I wanted to share my experience and introduce myself first.

Welcome! You've discovered that you're actually now on the bright side, and the dark side is elsewhere. ;)

Welcome to the forum. I too bought and sold one after another never bonding with any one guitar/brand. Not any more. There is a very short list of non PRS guitars I would consider but 98% of what I browse for on line is PRS.

I don't have near the collection some guys here do but I'm dam happy with what I have.

It's a joke that Gibson can't get their quality control to a consistent standard, in this modern age with CNC machines, lasers and techniques they constantly let sub par products out the door. A SE has better finish than a LP standard and you'd wonder what is going on there.

welcome to the board and getting your first PRS, I've recently got into PRS too, already pre-ordered my second and want to get a 3rd lol it never stops.

Reminds me of... me.

Welcome to the club! I too don't fully understand why PRS hasn't completely dominated the electric guitar market.

Welcome to Club Bernie. Great guitars and you got a great price.

we've had this discussion. lol

Factors include:
1. G & F having a decades head start
2. the classic riffs of the 60s and 70s being played on Gs & Fs,
3. Strats, Teles and LPs have a signature sound (see #2). What does a PRS sound like? Creed?
4. not a lot of big names besides Santana and Lifeson playing PRS (Mark Tremonti no matter how talented he is will always be Creed......good luck with that lol ).
5. Reputation for high prices and over the top looks. Combined with other listed factors makes people believe PRS is for dentists and lawyers who prefer the look and the name because they can't play,
6. lack of a lower priced USA line until recently. The SEs are awesome, but lots of people won't play them because they are prejudiced against imports.

The irony on this point is that F & especially G has jumped into the wall hanger pool while at the same time racing to see what is the cheapest (quality and consistency be damned) guitar they can sell.

The S2 should be that happy medium between the top of the line US models and the bottom of the line imported models. Smart move I think...they just need to get the S2's in the stores!!!

The fit, finish, and playability of my Cu24 S2 is incredible!

Tremonti will always be Creed? well, with all respect I disagree, I'm fan of Alter Bridge, that's why I've own 2 prs se so far (planning to buy a core shortly) and I don't really know the work of Creed. I guest is matter of time to PRS to rule the market, I am 22 and I am already sold to PRS Guitars jaja (I've own Epiphone, Squier, Dean but I ended up selling them) ...Cheers!

Creed? Who's that?

Alter Bridge and Tremonti albums are killer and packed with amazing riffage. Creed is just something he did to "warm up"

You are preaching to the choir my friend ! I too picked up a SE series recently and am now so blown away i'm selling my entire stable ! Well, i'm hanging onto the LP P90 special i recently bought and unlike you i DID bond with and in fact loved it so much i was hunting for a LP humbucker/maple top model when i stumbled upon the PRS. But since i got the PRS i can't even stand playing the LP ! Mine is a santana, but the bernie is on my list too. The amazing thing is before i picked up the santana by sheer fate that day, PRS was about the last guitar i ever wanted. Now they're ALL i want !

Like you, at first i figured another cosmetically pretty import like epi and others but with cheesy design details under the pretty clothes. I was shocked to find no spliced headstock like all the other tilt back head imports. Steel block unlike any of the fender imports. Real maple cap instead of just pretty veneer. (veneer on top, but real thick maple cap under it for that tonal clarity) Great quality pots and a decent switch. Everything is just total quality and no skimping on things that would hurt tone. PRS is now my fav guitar company period. Not sure if i will ever play anything else. My LP feels clumbsy now.

Agree!
FennRx mentioned Creed in two of the six points about G v F v PRS, sounds like he may have just had a bad experience with Creed music. It's not the year 2000 anymore.
I would be willing to bet that the Tremonti model is the top selling sig SE ever. And maybe top 5 sig Core line.

I remember Incubus got pretty big when I was at a very musically impressionable age (junior-high transitioning to high school). I've always associated PRS with that sound, I remember the videos of Mike Einziger with the thick PRS hollowbodies and customs, how his tone could go from being so airy and ethereal to grinding saturated gain. I pick up my first PRS tomorrow, got rid of my Gibby LP to get it. I do still love my Tele though!
