New Pedalboard aka Nebulon B progress build

Six months or so update is; there is no pedalboard progress.

It's all packed up the way you saw it last. I'm playing directly into an amp and honestly; it's refreshing and surprisingly fun. I have changed the amp settings quite a bit, shifted gain structure on my Fillmore up with clean/green set to drive - which makes this channel a bit crunchy, but cleaning up nice with a guitar volume. The Drive/red is now set to Hi, and maxed on drive knob. I took the bass down and bumped midrange. Still reacting well enough to the volume knob.

The whole idea was to learn my amp inside out. To be happy with the base tone and to enhance what needs to be enhanced. In a short sentence; I'm still up for the pedalboard build, but it won't be as packed with options as before.

Like you, I've gone back and forth on whether to use pedals at all.

In my world, it depends on the project. I can't make any hard and fast rules, because the very next project is probably gonna break 'em.

My board is kinda medium sized, but it's very simple, no pedal looper/switchers, etc. Keeps the stuff organized and ready to go, and that's all I need a board to do.

If I would be in your job position, my pedalboard would be aircraft carrier sized, Les.

The more I do it, more I think again I could fit it all on SA250. I honestly would, but I just don't want to get through hassle if selling my SA450 with a loss and waiting for a new board, only to make 180 degree turn and starting messing around when the next cool thing comes up.

There's one pedal I play actually, it's a big box Fulltone Soul-Bender my wife gave me for Christmas back in 2007 I think. I had it in storage boxes for the past 15 years, and recently got it shipped from my old country. I love this pedal, and I may pop it on a new board at some point.

I figure with the two H9s there isn't much I haven't got covered if one of my analog pedals doesn't do something I need.

On rare occasions I have to buy a pedal. Sometimes I keep 'em, but that's kind of unusual.

The problem with the smaller boards I've had is the minute I finish setting one up, I discover I need one more pedal. o_O

I've got a few things that aren't on my 750; I've thought about adding another 750 to the arsenal so I'd have plenty of room to expand.

On the other hand, it's one of those projects that's great in theory, but then there's the drawback of finding a spot for it in the room, the planning, etc. So I've been putting it off.

I don't have enough pedals to fill up another 750, of course. But you never know.

I still have the H90, and I use it a lot for all FX Loop stuff. But it's really small bits here and there. Tremolo, for example I have on 20% mix, you can barley hear it. I use the H90 for reverb (studio type, short and minimal mix, yet always on) mostly, and some poly octave here and there. Octave up is the only effect I'm truly addicted to; both analog and polyphonic. I still prefer Volante delays, though; Volante may return on my board at some point. I'm just hoping they will make it in a smaller factor. It's alright, I have time.

I have quite a few pedals I'm finding hard to part with. I have few Pete Cornish pedals, every incarnation of a Tube Screamer, some Dinosaural pedals, some weird stuff that was given to me. I just don't really find them essencial, or even needed at all to make music the way I feel. I actually started building few pedals for myself after 15 years of hiatus. But that's whole another story, for a different time.

Exactly! This is what Im worried about. No matter How well I plan my board, there's always something on the horizon I just need to have nearby

I would love to see that

Oddly enough, I run my tremolo on about 20% mix the same way. Just to add a little bit of movement to chords; I have one of the H9s on delay most of the time and the other on reverb, though right now I'm on a rotary speaker emulation kick.

I love a real rotary speaker. Mesa made one for a while, and of course, by the time I decided to get one they had discontinued it and I couldn't find one. Typical of how things go. But the H9 emulation is pretty darn good, so at least there's that. If memory serves, there was a good one on the H300 d/se rack piece I had in my old studio.

It's like my deal with that Blues Power Deluxe you linked in another thread.

I'd like one, but I don't really have room for it on the 750, which is about the largest board I can handle without really buying an engine hoist. I have room only for the smaller, standard model on my current board. So how often would I need the extra features to justify starting a second build? Beats me.

Flashback:

Back in the mid-90s when I used rack gear, a buddy told me I'd be better off with two smaller racks that I could actually move around than one large one.

He was right, of course; I know this because I ignored his advice, got a 20 space rack, loaded it up, and...yeah. Couldn't move it in and out of the house without assistance.

I wound up using it only in the studio, where I could at least roll it over near the console and run a speaker cable to a cab in the recording booth. I guess it sorta worked out.

And now we return you to current reality (such as it is):

Adding a smaller, lighter board might be a better idea than trying to reinvent the 750 and making it heavier by loading it up with more stuff.

As it happens, I have another Voodoo labs power supply I'm not using, and enough stuff to populate a small board, so I'm going to see if adding another Schmidt Array and sitting it next to the current one in an effects chain makes sense. I have two loop pedals, and another good buffer, so it'd be easy to bring it in and out of the signal path without noticeable signal loss.

I'd need it built for my studio needs, of course, and that's TBD.

It might be worth spending the dough on if I get enough use out of it. 'If' being the operative word here. A big 'if'.

Scrapped!

I'm now officially in mourning and am flying my pedalboard bag at half mast. 😢
Sending positive vibes haha

It's OK man, the board need to fit me. No matter how solid I am with my rig choices, there's always a change at some point.

You should like the new board concept, though. Not only the execution but also the pedal choices. I have something really special on order. It's only a booster, but the best character booster I ever tried. Previously, it was a part of a 3-in-1 pedal I love, but can't use; it's too big. I was asking for this pedal for 2 years, and it's finally a reality. I'm also getting s/n #1

:D I was kidding around, of course.

You bet! I've had several very nice and rather expensive boards made that were great - for someone else. That's the way it goes sometimes!

Can't wait to check it out!
