Hello everyone! Back in November I purchased a CE-24 Goldtop in pretty good condition (a few scratches and dings never hurt anyone). Ever since the first time I saw one of the Modern Eagle models, I obsessed over someday owning a USA PRS. As someone on a bit of a budget, I discovered the CE models, and found that the bolt-ons were pretty unique, and also were a little cheaper than the set-neck models. I was able to get a good deal on this beast, and to this day I'm stoked! This one is a '94 with an alder body, so it is definitely on the bright side. The Vintage Bass neck pickup is very smooth with an abundance of low end, and sounds fantastic. However, I was very disappointed to find that the HFS bridge pickup has very little low end response, and is actually very shrill. After some reading, it seems like many people like to change out the HFS because of the fact that it's too dark and muddy. It's funny because that's what I want! Not necessarily muddy, but darker and thick. The current HFS in my CE-24 is weaker than a weak Tele single coil (not that there's anything wrong with a good 'ol Tele)! After lengthy research, I could not figure out the problem. The wiring is correct, and everything is connected properly with no cold solder joints, but there is just too much difference in bass between the bridge and neck pickup. I do understand that the neck is naturally supposed to have more bass than the bridge, but not overwhelmingly so. I even adjusted both pickup heights time after time. Again, the VB pickup sounds fantastic, but the HFS is very shrill and lacks bass. I was able to contact someone selling an older HFS pickup from a CE-24, and he said the one he was selling made his sound thick and heavy like a Les Paul. That's exactly what I need, and I got a good deal, so hopefully it solves my problems and I'm not doing anything rash.

Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this guitar! The playability is unreal. It has a great finish, and PRS' attention to detail is phenomenal. If this HFS pickup that I ordered solves my problems, then I will be 110% satisfied. Thank you for welcoming me to the PRS community!

P.S. Sorry if the pictures are too large or poor quality, I'm quite new to this.

I plan to post more pictures of the rest of the guitar as soon as I can take some good ones.

Nice guitar and welcome! (My CE is due to arrive saturday...I suspect I'll like it as much as you do yours:beer:)

Also forgot to mention that Traynor right there is a '75 Mark III YGL-3, for what it's worth. A friend of mine's father gifted it to me, and after years of not being used, it definitely needed some work (New caps, resistors, and much more). It's stunning.

Two sleepers: the CE-24 and the Traynor!

Alder CEs ROCK! You don't see too many gold tops either. Hope the replacement pickup works out...congrats and welcome!

I like that a lot. Been thinking I need another CE...Should have never traded the one I had. Welcome to the forum!

I just checked out the product dating section of the PRS Customer Support, and apparently mine was actually made in 1999. The Guitar Center I got it from said it was a 1994.:dontknow: Doesn't bother me any, but doesn't that mean it's actually made of mahogany instead of alder?

Ugh...I made an offer on a CE today. This is just making my GAS worse! :P beautiful guitar!

Killer Goldtop. I wonder if your HFS might have gone bad? It happens. I used to have a sweet 91 CE with HFS/VB. Mine was anything but shrill or muddy.

Thanks! Good news: the HFS I just put in today is perfect. Nice heavy and smooth tone. I'm thinking one of the two coils in the last one went bad, because every other position worked fine. Unfortunately it was my (and my dad's) first pickup change. It went well but the wires were short and required splicing. It's not pretty but it did the job!

Congrats on the CE. They are fabulous guitars. I am one of those that doesn't care for HFS however I keep my McCarty tuned to D and the HFS worked well in that application.
