Hello people. I am wanting to buy my 14 year old son his first PRS. He has played a steel string electric acoustic for a few years but he really wants an electric for Xmas. He likes bands like Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters and a bit of Dave Mathews. The budget is big so head for the top!

Honestly, there isn't going to be too many wrong choices in the PRS lineup. I would recommend getting him in a local guitar store that has a decent selection of PRS guitars and let him pick out what is best for him. Between the Core, S2, and SE lineups, there's something for just about everyone!

If I had to pick one, I'd choose the Custom 24. It's comfortable, sounds great, and its the iconic PRS guitar!

I LOVE SPENDING OTHER PEOPLE'S $!!! WOOHOO! :D I'd get him something with a piezo if likes the Dave Matthews Band - will give him the option of acoustic, electric or both mixed together. I'd go P245 or P245 Semi Hollow myself. But anything with a P in front should have piezo. Anything in the hollowbody section of the website will have the piezo as well.

It's good that the budget is big; I would honestly say for a teen an S2 Custom 24 or S2 Standard 24 would be more than enough guitar, and leave plenty of room for customizations, pedals, amp etc as needed.

Beat me to it!
And being a Dave Matthews I whole heartedly agree.

I bought my son (16) a 513 in the last month. He had been using my Pauls Guitar frequently before that. My son plays a bit of everything and the 513 does everything well. Killer looking guitars too.

In fact, I bought myself a 513 as well, just fantastic guitars.

After reading the forums on pick ups are the 59/09 ok, or should I look for one wi the 85/15? It's heaps of money if it isn't right!

This is going to be a great guitar. There is nothing wrong with the 59/09. I have them on a couple of guitars, including private stock. The specs are very strong.
That is a heck of a gift. One that will last a lifetime.

My parents are obviously total jerks.

My father has been dead since 1986, when they didn't even have Private Stocks. But I feel abandoned nonetheless. He'd have gotten me one, right? :iamconfused:

On the other hand, I offered my son the use of my McCarty Singlecut for his current tour, but he said he was covered with sufficient guitars. That was kind of a relief, actually. ;)

I imagine it sure would be a chunk of change. Why go the PS route ? Is your 14yo really going to appreciate a curly maple top and hybrid hardware and other PS specific features over 85/15, which might be more versatile for the kind of music a young bloke will explore.

Of of course maybe he will be smitten with the PS features. Not that I could of afforded it anyway but I don't think my son would get curly or quilted maple. He didn't like the Azul finish on my 513, he thought it looked too "vintage".

Good luck with the hunt. Your son is going to be stoked with his PRS, I'm sure. Mine sure is.
