Hi All,

New to the forum but not PRS having had an SE CU24 and currently owning a Studio. I am looking at getting a USA custom 24 but am intrigues by the P24. Am I right in thinking they are essentially the same guitars apart from the Piezo? In other words will it sound and play just like a CU24 if not using the piezo?

The reason I ask is I like the idea of the P24 but cannot try one but I have tried a CU24 and love it.

Thanks
John

Hi John, welcome!

The quick answer is yes, the P24 is essentially a CU24, and will sound similar. The reality is, as with any guitar, every guitar will end up sounding different. I have two Custom 22's with identical specs and pickups, just different colors and 4 years apart, and they sound very, very different.

I believe the P24 is just a tad thicker in the body than a Cu24. I'll confirm this once the P24 Trem I've ordered comes in and I can compare it against my Cu24. Personally, I can't wait. I just ordered a Marshall acoustic amp to run the P24's Piezo output into.

Wow, that's really gorgeous!!

A question - why would you rather have the P24?

P22 body thickness is increased like a McCarty over CU22. The P22 body is routed differently to allow for more electronics, and all of that affects tone as well. I took delivery of a Private Stock modded P22 in January and it KILLS. You'll love it!

Not sure really, just thinking if it sounds like a CU24 but with the added option of the piezo sounds it is a win win (apart from the extra cost) My other option is a Paul's Guitar which I love the look of but not certain about the sounds. I mainly like to play classic rock and blues and have a LP R8 as well as the studio so just trying to find what will give me the most variety vs those 2 guitars.

I don't know how the prices compare between the two, but if the custom is cheaper I would definitely take that and a PRS Se Angelus (custom or standard) with the piezo. That way you can have decent acoustic tone when you are not in a situation where you have to plug into the board.

Body thickness might be a whole other factor of course...

I love the ease of having the piezo and magnetic pups all together. Sure, it doesn't sound like a mic'd acoustic. Neither does a piezo on an acoustic guitar. If you think the piezo is going to be useful, go for it. I've got a P22 and love the tones and combinations.

If you don't think you'll use the piezo, get the Paul's! Awesome guitar, with a different set of great tones.
