I just possession of a 2007 McCarty and I wanted to introduce myself.

Now for the question part:

When I took possession of the McCarty it didn't have a coil tap switch. I thought that was standard. Also, it came with Dimarzio Virtual PAF's. I don't like them, neck has no high end and the bridge just doesn't doesn't do it for me. Any suggestions for a set of pickups? If someone wants to sell a set of 57/08's cheap, I'm listening :D

It's possible that whomever swapped out the original pups also swapped out the coil tap...

But, are you -sure- there's no coil tap? Give a good tug up on the tone knob to be sure...

Best way to do this is with a shoelace, or better yet, a lace from a pair of ice skates.

Place the guitar face up on the ground. Loop the string under the knob. Then, stand on the face of the guitar, wrapping the lace around your wrist until there's no slack. Stand up, but slowly - allow the effort to come from your legs, not your shoulder. If the pot pulls through the face of the guitar, you know there's no tap.

After about my third PRS, I didn't care about the taps any more, but I had a great appreciation for the repair skills of the PTC! :flute:

Seriously, Bugs Henderson told a great story at Experience. He said he'd watched another player getting some cool single-coil tones, so he asked someone about it and they told him it was a coil tap. He said, "I wish I had that on mine." So whoever it was reached down and pulled the tone knob out. Bugs said he'd had the guitar for years and didn't know anything about it. He said he went back to his hotel to see if his other guitar had one, too, and he said he pulled on the tone knob so hard he shot it across the room.

No coil tap. I took the control plate off to look. Just a regular pot.

I bought a beater guitar to learn how to pull them apart and put them together and I similar knob incident. I pulled so hard trying to get it off, I smacked myself in the face and gave myself a shiner. The next day I bought a puller from Stewmac.

The 1st year McCarty didn't have the coil tap. Every other year did. So unless it is a 1994 McCarty, it left the factory with one.

It is a skill that can erode over time, so I make sure to pull my knob fairly frequently. Just so I don't lose the touch!
