I'm considering investing in the HBII in march, it's a great guitar and super versatile. but I'm afraid that I'm going to choose a color that I may find spectacular durring the honey moon phase but that I may regret later on. There are so many different color options! I also want to pick the one that has the "flame" top that speaks to me the most, be it a 10 or a regular top

So how did you all decide on what to get? It's a pretty expensive mistake if you choose one from being overwhelmed. That's a good way to describe how I feel... Overwhelmed haha

Thanks for your time, I'm looking forward to hear from how you all chose your colors!

Hi, I agree that it is a very nice guitar and you definitely want a color that you would like for a long time. Personally I have always liked the sunburst colors and the orange tiger. If I were you I would be debating on the McCarty sunburst or the Orange Tiger, but that is just my opinion. Good luck on the new guitar

Welcome to the forum!

I wish I could help. I have two and I'm planning to get another, but I still can't decide exactly which color. At least I've eliminated the two colors I have.

I am currently putting each color name into a PRS Google image search in my spare time, but I think you're right. The right one will speak to you, but there will always be another one catching your eye.

My first was Vintage Yellow, because it was the right price and I wanted a PRS I could afford. My second was Blue Crab Blue because I wanted a 10 top, I like blue, I'm from MD, and I love blue crabs.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Focus on finding the one with the tone that speaks to you, and the color and other appearance issues won't matter so much. They all sound individually different.

If the guitar's tone doesn't speak to you, the color and appearance are irrelevant, you won't keep the guitar.

If you're worried about color, go with something traditional. You'll never get sick of it.

And if you're still too scared you might make a bad decision, wait a while. Or learn to play the piano. They only come in a few colors.

You can't miss with the more traditional looks like McCarty Sunburst, Dark Cherry Burst or Antique Natural.

I personally went the other way when I ordered my HBII (11+ years ago) and chose Turquoise. Over a decade later, I still love it because I prefer the more bold, modern colors because I feel like PRS makes bold, modern instruments. I've only seen a few others in that color, so I like that it's pretty unique.

Great thing about PRS is they all look pretty amazing, so there's really no "wrong" choice.

Thanks every one for your replies, got some really good advice in here. March is a long ways away so I'll have time to choose patiently what color i would prefer, my plan is to take all the time in the world and really try out as different models and guitars as I can. As of now my heart's on the HBII, but the only other guitar that might sway me would be a 335. That said the 335 would have to be absolutely OUTSTANDING in both finish and playability

Oh and i played on a CU24 for the first time and i was surprised by how amazing it felt and sounded, blew all my expectations away

Are you looking to order now..... or wait until you have the $$s in hand and jump on the right one??

Do you have any favoured colors??? Blues?? Browns??

to me it is not just about color, or about the figure but the way the 2 go together!

I haven't much cared for most of the new color options PRS has come out with. I prefer the classic jewel colors like Royal Blue, Emerald Green, and Purple. Of the "natural" stains, I always preferred Violin Amber Sunburst. But there is one exception to the new colors that I really love: Black Gold.

Really love the way that color looks on figured maple. As an added plus (for me, at least), it's a wraparound color -- no faux binding.

I'm waiting to buy because i am currently studying abroad informally. I'll be getting back in March and by then I'l know if i was accepted into a masters program or not and i figured either way; if i've come this far its time to invest in a quality instrument. I'm from maryland so I'l have all the time in the world to pick the right one.

As far as color goes i'm usually a sunburst kind of guy, but pictures on the web aren't cutting it for me, i'm not liking how the burst fades i guess would be the way to describe it. That violin burst is looking SEXY as hell however; and I've also been considering Santana yellow. I feel like going with a blue, purple, or green might be nice now, but later on may come across as cheesy (no offense to all of you out there who have axes these color, just not for me)

Sound first, colour second... if the one in your favourite colour is a dud, that's going to piss you off down the road far more than the finish. But, don't think you should 'settle' either for something you don't love, because it may not inspire you.

My HBII is faded gray black... would not have been my first choice but by no means a colour I dislike (except on singlecuts - I really don't like FGB on singlecuts, dunno why!) - a number of other factors came together that enabled me to get it - it sounded good, the price was right, etc.

Black Gold is amazing too (my HB12 is BG) but sometimes I miss the scraped binding... makes the guitar look a little more classy IMO.

I know how important is the looks of the guitar, but if the guitar speaks to you, then you will love the color forever. the only thing is after a while you'll want another one (maybe a different model) not because you really need it, but because you felt in love with another finish.
I have more guitars then I really need and I am looking for a Eriza Verde smoke burst guitar... with model? does it really matters?

Here's another thought: if you found a guitar in a colour that you don't love but everything else about it is nigh on perfect... well, call up the PTC and see if they have anything to say. For a little extra, depending on the colour it was originally finished in, you might be able to get them to perform a minor miracle.

Sunbursts don't always photograph well, so I'm sure the fades all look great in reality.

I agree on Black Gold, it's a gorgeous color. On the HBII though, I'd miss the unstained maple edges. I love the double bound look.

As far as the bolder colors go, I think they generally fair well over time. It's not like we're talking neon 80's colors here.

But, that said, McCarty Sunburst, mmmmmmmm...

Go for tone, then finish. Like everyone else said, if you don't end up liking the tone, you'll ditch the guitar regardless of color.

I have always played it fairly safe, colorwise. Lots of naturals, browns (my one and only custom ordered guitar is a violin amber 513), and the occasional black. In the early 90's, my first PRS was purple, and a total departure. I miss that guitar! A couple months ago, I bought an SC HB II...in JADE GREEN. It was a big departure, but I love the guitar. To my ears, it's by far my best sounding guitar.

Play as many as you can when you get back in the states, and find the one that won't let you put her down. Good luck, and let us see it when you get it!

This. No matter how over the top a guitar looks, if it does not sound GREAT, its gone. Better to have an ugly, beat up guitar that sounds great than to have an off the charts looker that sounds "ok". As other have said too, "Black gold" is one of the coolest colors PRS has ever come out with IMO.
