Beautifully Broken
So the 2009 Korina McCarty with P90's finally arrived at my door. After spending a little over a week sitting in customs it took just a couple of days to show up. When I got home from work I immediately unboxed it and strummed it a little before heading off to the gym. To my suprise it was in tune even after handling by Canadian Post, United States Post and Customs. After getting back from the gym I plugged into my Boogie Express Plus and gave it a little run through. Unfortunately I live on the second floor of an apartment complex so I kept the volume very low so I wouldn't be "that guy". First impression is the guitar is very good looking. Of course it doesn't have the dazzle of a maple top but the grain of the Korina is attractive while being understated. A small nick on the headstock, some very light buckle rash, pick scrapes and some funky thing going on with one of the dot markers are all pretty small blemishes that aren't out of line for a used guitar.
Plugging in my first thought is that it is quite a bit darker than my Tele. This is no big suprise but it also seems to be darker than my SE SoapbarII. This also could be due to the low volume since my pedal board and amp settings are set for gig levels. Nothing a little knob twiddling won't fix if needed. I can't keep from staring at the bird inlays
. My regular McCarty has moons and so does my SE. Now maybe I have an excuse for always staring at the fretboard when I'm playing. I'll give it a proper workout at our gig this weekend as I plan on using it as my main guitar (for this gig at least) and keeping the Tele as backup. The other guitar player in the band, who has and gigs with several PRS, always harasses me about not bringing out my McCarty to gigs. Its just so darn pretty and I'm such a klutz I don't want to risk the wear and tear and damage to which gigging invariably leads.
One of the things I really like about the SE Soapbar was the amount of volume knob roll off that I could do before an appreciable volume drop occured. That is one of my favorite things about the SE and it really gets some cool tones with just the volume know adjustments. It is actually the guitar that taught me to "play" the volume knob. The Korina seems to have more volume drop but it does seem to clean up fairly well.
Since I'm at work and Photobucket is blocked I'll have to post pictures later.
