I was in the picture uploading mood so I wanted to share what I've been working on the past few weeks:

At my new house, I didn't really have a guitar dedicated space yet, and this little cubby hole was asking for it. I took the wood from old shipping pallets and stained them all different colors. The only thing that cost anything was the desk top itself, and supplies. It's built into the wall (floating style) at a perfect height for me. Not really sure what to do with the guitars that don't have hangers yet. I also had second thoughts about the lamps, wondering if they'll fade out the guitars above them. But it's a dark room, so I need the light. Thoughts?

Anyways, I thought it turned out nice!

Niiiiice!

The wood wall is excellent! Your wall impressed Mrs. Ruger and she's not easily impressed!

Wall mounted sconce lights pointed up at the ceiling would provide reflected and even illumination.

That is absolutely fantastic. You are an artist! I wish I had your talent for design!

Some stains and dyes are photosensitive, doesn't matter if it's daylight or artificial light. Other stains are less so. But organic stains allow the wood grain to show through more than inorganic stains, and organic stains tend to be the most photosensitive. Certain colors are more photosensitive than others, as well.

Photons are gonna be photons, so they're gonna do their thing. This is why a film camera works just fine indoors, and just fine outdoors. The emulsion on the film is photosensitive, and while there's more light outside, it is just as happy to work inside if you open the lens up wider and give it more light, or use a flash.

So it's possible that the lamps will cause some fading to occur, and because they're close, perhaps the guitars will get more light, and be more prone to fading. I've seen it happen in stores where walls of guitars are lit; you often see more fading on the instruments that are closer to the light source.

You might be able to minimize the issue by simply switching from the lamps you're using to task lights that point down toward your work surface. Or maybe indirect lighting elsewhere in the room would be a better choice for you.

Then, too, some folks can manage their worry about this stuff much better than I can. I keep my guitars in their cases because I've become so attached to them and worry about their well-being. ;)

Thanks for the kind words guys, and also the tips on the lights. I still have some modding to do, cords to hide, etc, so I'll look into getting new ones.

First of all, I love the look of the wood stained different colors. It puts me in mind of different tonewoods there -- maple, hog, cocobolo, ziricote, rosewood, etc. -- it's like you have your own private little wood library.

Secondly, I would put any blue guitars in front of the lights, and confirm that they do indeed fade out the finish. If they do, I'll send you one of my two blue guitars to fade as a service to me. :D They need to have some UV content, though.

I'm a big fan of LED lights -- Ikea used to have something called Trunna, but it didn't provide much in the way of illumination. In fact, it's mostly just decorative, like porn lights. Which, in fact, would be appropriate. No, seriously, I'm sure there have been plenty of better suggestions.

Your cubby hole is great. Since you have no place for the extra guitars, why not just send them to one of us ??? Seriously, great space and well done.

Nice! You did a great job with a small(er) space.

That's inspiring to me as I will likely be moving into a two bedroom with my lady soon, and the second bedroom is a narrow room and I will have to get creative to accommodate the music setup (desk, ~3 guitars, a couple medium sized amps, some practice gear, accessories drawer, pedalboard, etc.). I want it to look sharp and tidy while being warm and relaxing.
