A little change of pace. I've got a friend who is thinking of getting a new cell phone. He asked me what I would recommend, and I didn't really have an answer for him. He's wanting to get rid of his Blackberry, but in favor of what? I've always been a Motorola guy, but he's looking at Samsung and of course the latest I-Phone. What do you use? What are some of the pros and cons?

I have the iPhone 5. But I've used an iPhone for the last 4 years, so nothing to compare it to...

Pros? It works. Sync to my Mac seamlessly.

Cons? The new one's battery life could be better...

The iPhone is an iPhone (I have one). It's proprietary, so you have to go all in, more or less. Other phones use Android operating systems or a Windows for phones, so there's a lot of variety out there. I'm still waiting for my Samsung Galaxy Note to arrive. I own two tablets - an iPad and one of the brands that run Android. There are a lot of applications for both systems that are quite similar. "Whatapp" is a messenger application that talks to both systems, there are other apps that are made for both systems. Your phone plan and call quality are far more important than the phone. There are a couple of Android-specific apps that I wish were on the iPhone (GoogleMaps), we had to wait for SJ to die before getting proper YouTube, and there are some things I can do on my iPhone that are not covered (yet) by 'Droid apps. There is convergence on the horizon, though, given all of these lawsuits between Samsung and Apple :shakehands:

I am an Android user.
I had the original Motorola Droid when it came out, now I have the Droid Bionic which I will keep until I upgrade again sometime in late 2013.
I like the Android platform very much.

The GPS/Google Maps built in is just as good if not better than most dedicated talking GPS units you buy separately to put in your vehicle.

Also with Verizon, and I have the LTE 4G which is scary fast, almost as fast as my 25 to 30K megabit speed of my home Comcast cable.

Samsung Galaxy SIII - as a tech nerd, it's the first phone where I haven't been counting down the days until I had an upgrade for something new.

I am also going to be upgrading sometime soon and maybe even changing carriers from sprint to AT&T so I am curious about everyones opinion. I am currently using motorola photon but was thinking about switching over to iphone mostly because you can get the cool guitar apps and an Irig and play guitar,

I tried the irig, and it was ok but not ground breaking. It's cool toy, but if I have an amp around, I go for that every time.

Love the iphone though. A lot of techies don't like them, but as a 70 year old man in a 26 year old body (I've already lost track of technology) I think they're great. Everything just works, you hardly even have to think about it. Especially if you're switching from a blackberry, you'll feel like you just got out of prison!

I have an iphone and love it. It's very intuitive and user-friendly. If your friend is a big techy he may like the Droid better, but for average folks the iphone is awesome.

That is the best way to sum up the Droid vs iPhone debate - way to end the war with a sentence, Shawn! hahah

iphone

somewhat on topic: can we talk about ringtones? vibrate is the only option. you might not know that because no one felt bold enough to tell you, but...please...vibrate.

I haven't upgraded my mobile for a few years. The girlfriend has an iPhone which - to be fair - is pretty cool and i'll likely take use of that when she upgrades on contract. Got a Google Nexus tablet which is Android based and seems equally as cool as the iPhone. If I was buying a new smartphone i'd probably go with an Android based one based on what you get for the money.

I have the iPhone 5 and love it. Been iPhone exclusive since the 3G.. Intuitive is a word that gets thrown around a lot and I can't think of a better explanation of the user interface. I'm partial to them but I hear good things about the Galaxy phones.

maybe just a small uprising. i have been cursed with manners and good taste. i can't help it.

What?? You don't like hearing a tinny, low res version of "Endless Love" coming from the waistline of the large dude next to you?? Next, you'll be telling us that you don't like all the barking cars when people set/unset their car locks.

Ok - I'm with you on that. Coming out of a Macworld Expo at closing one day in about '93, the parking lot was alive with barking cars as people remotely unlocked their vehicles. The cacophony!

I've have been apple the last couple of years for my mobile devices only. I would never consider a Mac computer but I can see why some in the music industry do prefer them. I haven't really liked the Apple Ecosystem. It's extremely buggy and restrictive and is killing the freedom we have always had on computesr. My ipad, ipod, iphone all having issues with each gen. Every update that comes out seems to create more issues then the ones they fix. I hate being tied to itunes, and the latest release is very fussy. I'm acutally in IT, and have been a techy guys for 30+ years. Only got into Apple because I forced myself to learn it for my career. We have tons of Apple machines on campus, and I can't tell you how many issues they have. Their products are just over-marketed, overhyped toys. Apple is good at one thing, brain washing people into thinking that Apple is innovative and great quality. Apple hasn't actually invented anything really. I have never seen another product where people just blindly believe all the hype so much despite the countless issues. And Apple as a company is just a hateful, monopolizing dis-respectful company far worse then their competition has been over the years.

Now that Steve is gone, their products are just getting worse and worse. Do they have an App for just about anything, yup, and that is their one savoir right now.

Try Windows 8 phone, new Black Berry coming out in Jan. New Samsung is nice. Personally would avoid the overpriced Apple right now.
