I bought a Custom 22 in 2006 a bit on a whim when I was looking for new upscale electric. I'd always admired PRS guitars and found one I loved at Guitar Center. Recently while showing it to a novice guitar player and he started asking about the body wood and such and I was embarrassed that I'd never paid attention to any of that. When I bought the guitar I just loved the quality, the way it played and looked and that was enough. So I did some research on the PRS site to fill in the silly gaps in my knowledge but I also ended up with some questions that maybe forum readers can help with. Here is a link to photos of the guitar for reference.

So my questions are:

1. I assume the woods used in PRS haven't changed in many years so my guitar has mahogany back and neck, maple flame top, and rosewood fingerboard.

2. The color of my guitar, which I've always referred to as wine colored is listed on the receipt as black cherry. I can't find any reference to such a color on the PRS site. In 2006 would black cherry have been the correct designation for this? The closest current color on new PRS models is Fire Burst Red and that is quite different.

3. One defining embellishment on all the custom 22s I've seen photos of is an engraved truss rod cover with the word "custom" or the like on it. My is just plain black plastic as you can see from the closeup photo of the headstock. Was wondering if this is not unusual or if I should have caught this and complained about it when I bought the instrument. It's a minor thing to me but you know one of those little cool extras you like to have.

Thanks to anyone who can provide insights.

Regards,
JD

Yes, your guitar is still the same guitar they make nowadays in terms of woods, thicknesses etc. They have changed the pickups, the switching, and the inlays since you bought yours, but it's essentially the same guitar.

PRS have changed the range of colours available a few times since 2006 so you won't find black cherry listed any more, but that would have been the correct designation for your colour.

The new "Custom" truss rod cover wasn't around back then either so I wouldn't worry about that.

Enjoy the guitar you have. And if you want all the new features, you know what to do - buy another one.

Excellent. Thanks ADP for that info. I definitely still love this guitar. The thing captivated about it from the start was how it felt to me when I played it and that is still a joy.

Congrats! I think that may be Scarlet Red rather than Black Cherry due to the non-black back, but it's hard to tell from the pic.

If you pull the neck pup you'll see what's referred to as a MODCAT, it will be a series of cryptic letters and a UPC looking thingy. There's a thread here that will tell you what those letters mean so you can have all the info available on your new guitar.
