Today is my step-sons 12th birthday, and he's been bothering us for months that he wants to learn to play the bass, he's even signed up with Jazz band in school to play bass to show us he's serious.

Its been a pretty hectic couple of weeks since were in the middle of moving, and he's been asking for a PS3 for his birthday... since I already have a PS3 (and PS4 for that matter), we disappointed him and told him absolutely not. Yesterday we decided to surprise him and took him in to the evil GC to let him hold a few and see what was comfortable for him.

He ended up really liking the Ibanes GSR200, and the only guy I deal with at GC showed us the Ampeg BA-108, which is just a killer amp for "under" $100. He threw in a gig bag, cable, strap and beginner bass book for almost nothing... then we tortured the kid by putting it on layaway, lol. Since we're in the process of moving, figured it would be safer in the store than trying to find a place for it in all this mess we got going on, but he'll have it in his hands in a week or so.

He promises he's not going to give up, and wants to work toward getting good enough to get a PRS Grainger... hopefully he follows through, but if he doesn't, ill have myself a pretty sweet little bass setup, lol.

My daughter started playing guitar when she was 5, but gave up a few years ago when she moved back with her mom. Since the boy is getting the bass, she picked her guitar up again for the first time, made me so happy :-)

Awesome. I played bass in jazz band for two years in high school and it was a blast. Take care of the kid's ears. I have hearing damage in my left ear largely from sitting next to the lead trumpet player in rehearsals five days a week (I'm sure jamming with drums in bedrooms on the weekends didn't help, either!).

He's started his music theory playing tuba in band now, and the book here's getting is Hal Leonard Bass Fundamentals, and since they teach notes in their books, not tabs, I'm hoping he doesn't make the same mistake I did, lol.

My daughter wants to learn how to play drums. She also signed up for jazz to do just that. They're both in 6th grade, so their part in jazz really is just a learning experience, then when they get to 7th grade they can try out. Were thinking about possibly getting her an electric drum set, but haven't decided yet. We're moving in to a town house, so I don't think the neighbors would be too thrilled about a real set. I could probably buy her a set and make her use dampners, but I think the electric would be better so she can at least hear what she's doing through headphones.

This is a great age to start them. If you wait much past 13 or so, their brain functions change a little bit, and it becomes more difficult for them to develop the brain-hand coordination needed.

I remember after "forcing" my son to take piano for several years -something he was good at, but didn't gel with - he switched to bass, and I got him the G&L he still records with. If a kid loves it and sticks with it, good things follow.

And from bass he went on to guitar, too. Now he plays all three, keys, bass and guitar.

Nice! Next up, a serious bassist outfit...

Well it looks like my daughter isn't going to be able to play drums in jazz band, but she was handed a bass and apparently played well enough that they're gonna let he also play bass, so looks like were gonna have 2 bass players in the house, lol. Suppose were gonna have to go out and buy another setup... I think she's pretty well set on a Kingfisher, but I wanna talk her down to something a little cheaper for now.
