Arrived today. My children had quite the day while I was at work - roofers showed up to do our roof, then they had to bring the amp in for me.
Got a couple bad cell phone pics before I plugged it in.
Took it down to my music area, shuffled some equipment, cables, power cords. Plugged my cable into my 408. Set all the tone knobs straight up. Set the volume levels to a reasonable guess. Flicked from standby to on. Turned the volume up on the guitar and...
Nothing. Not a peep. Zilcho.
Then it occurred to me - I probably should have plugged into THIS amp...
Yeah. I did that.
So, after I switched the cable from the C to the Archon...
Wow.
Like serious wow. I really like the clean tone I get from my Orange Dark Terror Jim Root. I love the clean on the 2-channel C. The clean on the Archon may be better. It has a sparkle and life that I just haven't found on the other amps I have. I was seriously blown away, which I did not expect. I mean, I've heard numerous people talk about how good the clean is, and I know first-hand how good the clean on the C is. But this is just incredible. And it takes pedals well - I played a fair bit with a Tone Bone Hot British, and the detail and clarity was off the charts. And responsive controls? Flipping the bright switch was almost like switching amps. The Depth control and the Presence both were far more useful than I really expected. I had tones all over the place without touching the tone controls, which were still at noon.
Then I flipped the switch to the dirty channel. One phrase kept coming to mind - SWEET SASSY MOLASSY! And I don't know why! I mean, I really liked that skit, but I never quote it. But that's what popped into my head repeatedly. Good god, the dirty channel on this thing is a beast. It would make Bigfoot soil his fur. Godzilla cower in a corner, whimpering like a whipped puppy.
(trying to recapture what I just lost when I timed out...but it's not happening!)
So much tone. Again - tone controls all at noon, just adjusting the gain, depth, presence and bright switch. Tones all over the place. So much detail. So responsive to changes on the guitar and amp. And with the gain at 3:00, I could get my inner Zakk Wylde happening with no effort at all. Sustain for hours. I could get just about everything I wanted out of it.
Everything I heard from everyone who has one of these was true. I felt like I could get anything I wanted from the amp.
And noise? Some amp hiss at higher gain, but on the clean channel and at the lower gain settings, very quiet.
I know I'm still in the honeymoon phase and I need to get some other guitars in the mix, but man - this thing knocks it out of the park big time.
Many thanks to Brian for making it happen.
I'll have to try to record some simplistic Carcass stuff for the weekend.
