NAD - Mesa Content

Sweet as sweet! Good job!

Agreed, but this all smacks of moderation: I did the logical thing, and picked up a Coli MkIIB :)
Isn’t that like 300 watts?
Said this before, but... after I got off the Mesa-go-round, they introduced this series, and I've been interested in it. Always wondered if this is the one I was looking for when I rolled through all the other Mesa amps.
It might be? It seems like an archon with a low gain channel in between the clean and mean. It covers ground I wanted covered, and is easier to dial in, and easier to live with than my mkv25. Too bad you’re not close by, we could bbq, have an iced tea and you could find out!

I always wondered about the character of OD and tone of the gain channel vs. the Marks, and then the added mid gain channel. If both of those were what I wanted, it could be "the one." I do want to try a 100 or 50 watt head, (and the new Tremonti amp. LOL)

Buy an amp, get a free pedal.

I probably ought to point out that I’ve never played through an Archon.

Sadly not - my first was a mere 200W fully driven, and showing 10 percent distortion on the AP test gear. My second (and now only) one is a little less beefy, at just over 180W. I think with a full service and re-tube I could maybe raise that a tad

As a mid 60’s rocker who was afraid to make the jump from an unruly 25 watt amp to a well behaved 100 watt amp, I totally respect the monster you have. Totally cool!

:(:(:( And I thought we was boys! Shame on you! 😔😔

😃
Well.... I put that out there, 'cause I'd made a statement that sounded like I had a good idea what the Archon sounds like, and I really don't. I didn't want to mislead you or anyone else. We can still be boys can't we?

Of course we can. Seriously, the TC offers 3 channels and "on paper" could be the amp I've always wanted... IF the three channels are all really good, which seems to be a hard thing to find. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE an Archon with a 3rd channel that was a great crunch, mid gain channel. So the new Tremonti model is on my radar. But I've tried to find a TC to play since they came out.

The Three Channels Are Really Good. You Should Get A TC-100. The Most Pleasant Surprise To Me With That Amp Was The Crunch Tones. The Cleans Are Great, The High Gain Is Great But The Dark Horse Surprise (At least To Me Anyway) Was Just How Good The Mid Gain Tones Of That Amp Are. Add To That How Wide Or How Far You Can Go In Various Directions Of Each Channel Was Also A Very Pleasant Surprise. By That I Mean For Instance How Far You Can Go Gain Wise And How Far You Can Back Off That Gain In Channel 3 To Get Really Nice Lower Gain Sounds. I Hope That Makes Sense On All Three Channels. I Call It "Wide" As In How Wide They Can Go Or Get. Very Versatile Amp. The Middle Ground The Archon Is Missing By Only Being Two Channels Is Not The Case With The TC-100. Hope That Helps To Clarify And That My Analogies Make Sense. :)

How would you describe the character of the drive and tone? I've always wanted the M tone from the 80s. I'd love to have 3 channels that had an 80s pushed (modified) Marshall tone on C2 and the Archon or similar on C3. I've always wanted a Bogner 101B but the low mid focus of the Bogner tone is not the same (though I do love it) as the upper mid push of the JCM800 tone. Yeah, I'd like both, but I just don't have the need for a bunch of amps.

Well..it Is A Mesa, Not A Marshall. ;)

That Said...The TC-100 Naturally Sits Sonically Higher Than The XTC So In That Regard I Guess You Could Say It Is More M Like. When You ay Modified Marshall, I Don't Know What Exactly You Are Referring To. I Can Guess In Many Directions And Be Right But I Don't Know What Specifically You Are Using in Your mind As A Starting Point And What That Modification Is Doing To The Original Sound Being Modified. Is It Saturation? Is It More Gain And Warmth? Less Top End Sizzle And Bite? Less Muddy Low End? All Of Those Things? Some Of Those Things? None Of Those Things? For Me, When I Think Of Modern Amps Being Made That Are Modified Or Hot Rodden M Type Amps I Think Friedman BE.

All That Said, The Mesa TC-100 Can Cover The Same Ground On Channel 2 As A 800 With More Or Less Gain Available. It Can be Dialed To Have Some Of That M Type Bite But It Isn't Exactly The Same. To Use Other Examples, Can The TC-100 Pull Off 60's Forward Rock Tones Of The Bands/Songs We All Know And Love? I Would Not Hesitate Using It For Those Songs And Back Then "Those Songs" Were Likely M Type Amps. The TC-100 Has A Nice Way About It. It Does Everything Well And The Three Channels Flow Together Beautifully IMO. There Seems To be More Gradual Movement To The Amp Overall That Marks Or DR's Where It Is This Or That And Hard To Find An In Between Easily And Quickly. Not The Case With The TC-100. There Are A Lot Of Available Mids And Top End To The Amp So I Really Believe You Could Get What You Wish Out Of It. It Is Incredibly Versatile And Hard To Make It Sound Bad. Of Course The Best Way For You To Really Know Is To Play One Or Buy One And Be Able To Return It If Not Happy. I Really Think You Would Be Pleasantly Surprised By It.

Side Note On The Bogner...It Can Be Brightened Up Quite A Bit But The Amp Sits Where It Sits And The Mesa Does Naturally Sit Higher.

Edit: This Video Gives You Some Of What I Am Talking About. You Can Hear It In Some Of The Various Parts And There Is More Of It (That Upper M Bite Aspect) That Can Be Done Settings Range Wise Very Easily. Hope This Helps!

Oh I know. But Mesa has tried it in the past (I know I should have bought a Stiletto years ago. LOL) and I just wondered how close it can be to the modified Marshall tones. And, by that I mean the ones that had some gain added. I know there were lots of mods but adding a bit of gain would be first if I had a stock JCM800

I Think This Is Their Best Attempt By Far At Doing The M Type Of Thing. Far More Gain Than An 800 If You Want It But Still Having M Attributes. It Is Tight Enough Without Feeling Stiff. It Has Plenty Of Squish Without Feeling Loose And Flubby. It Is Well Balanced And Can Be Smooth But It Can Just As easily Have Bite And Snarl To It. Plenty Of Headroom And Punch To It. The Modes And Knob Sweeps Can Take You Many Places. It Feels Nice Under The Fingers And You Don't Have To Fight The Amp. Great Harmonic Content And Dynamics To It. Is It Exactly All The M's from The Days Of Old? I Would Say Not Identically Although It Certainly Has Their Sonic DNA. If You Like The Stiletto Then You Would Love This Amp As It Is Everything And More IMO.

The Stiletto was a great, underrated amp. My son had one in college and I got to play through it fairly frequently.

It wasn't exactly, 100% Marshall, but it did a lot of Marshall-style things well, and had that thick Mesa clean tone that I find appealing.
