New Pooch Day!
Sadly, we had to say good-bye to our 15 year girl, Tyler (if you ask me, Steven and if you ask my wife, Bonnie) May 29th. She was in late stage heart failure. We got her when she was three after she was transferred to a rescue shelter in our area after the Joplin, MO. tornado in 2011. She had a rough life before coming here. Battle wounds, chipped, broken teeth, and heart worms. The shelter offered to take her back after we found out she had heart worms, but we just couldn't do that. Got her treatments to get past that, and then gave her 12 good years of the easy life.
The Mrs and I are gluttons for punishment (we just love pooches and there are too many that need a home) so we knew we wouldn't wait long to get another one. We spent a week looking at local rescues for prospective adoptions. We ended up at Naperville Humane Society on Sunday, June9th. We had chosen two to look at; the oldest dog they had, and the one that had been there the longest. Our only criteria was male, and at least three years old. The one that had been there the longest didn't pass muster because it was obvious why he had been there so long (almost a year). The oldest, a 4 year old 55 pound Husky/Hound mix was brought in to the room, and as soon as he came through the door Ruth and I looked at each other knowing that this was the one just by first glance. He is our fifth dog since 1991, usually having two at a time. Our first was Ace, and he had a 1/2 brown 1/2 blue eye. Next was Nikki who was a Husky Border Collie mix with a thick double coat and a tail that she curled up and held high like a Husky. Then came Ginger. He was a Collie Retriever or Setter mix with a brown and white face. Then came Tyler, a hound mix with a German Shepherd colored brown and black coat.
It was immediately noticeable that this 4 year old Husky/Hound mix was a mash up of our first four dogs. One blue eye like Ace. Thick double coat and tail of Nikki. Same head structure and facial coloring of Ginger. And, German Shepherd like coloring from the shoulders back, like Tyler. He was brought to the NHS in early April from a shelter in Quincy, IL. which is about 300 miles southwest of here. I have no idea how he ended up in a shelter. He is the sweetest guy. Knows several commands, is house broken, sleeps through the night, doesn't like "people food." He's warming up to the people food though. He's kinda goofy, and is settling in nicely after 2 1/2 weeks.
After all of this rambling, I present to you.........Cooper (as in Alice)
