It may not actually be all that uptown under all that veneer, but it sure does look the part!
I was "home" for the holidays and as usual went to check out the local music store, where this little cutie immediately picqued my interest - it was on the rack as pre-owned, yet still had the plastic protective film on the cover plates and the inspection tag (7/18! I later googled the stock number, and it shows up as a, "Limited Edition", evidently "limited" to Guitar Center and Musicians Friend) on a tuner. Not so much as a hairline scratch on it, or any evidence at all that it had been played even a little. It seemed to play OK, so I asked if it had a story and was told that the original owner had bought it for a backup but never used it. Being on a vacation trip I didn't have a lot time to agonize over a decision as I ordinarily would have, but it sure was pretty and the price was right so I told them to wrap it up.
I almost brought it back, though, after trundling it back to my sister's house where I was staying and giving it a more in thorough going over. I quickly realized that the action, though not awful, was still high but more importantly as low as any simple bridge/truss rod adjustments were going to get it. I figured I could deal with it though, so I brought it all the way home. I already went on at length about my ruminations on what was wrong with it on the tech forum if anyone is interested, but you can see the ultimate fix here, as the string slots in the bridge saddles are deeper than stock.

The vibrato is a John Mann 2 piece and the cocobolo truss rod cover is also an add on.
I just today replaced the "burry" domed screws in the cover plates with flat head brass ones (#4x1/2") which fit flush, so they look a little classier and also don't catch on clothing.
I have mixed feelings about the "wide-thin" neck, but apart from that I find it very comfortable (except for the vibrato cover plate, which seems awfully clunky). It does have it's own sound and character, and I appreciate how it manages to be both and neither a Les Paul nor a Strat. Actually, I was thinking it sounds rather like a certain Gretsch of my acquaintance. . .
So, I like it, but I'm not quite ready to join the cult!
