After hemming and hawing, and several near-misses over the past few years due to all of the Internet horror stories about neck pocket issues, I finally pulled the trigger on this lovely lady. Coz I NEEDED another guitar:

EGII_zpsrgysbsc0.jpg

1991 EG II Maple Top. HSS - 2x Fralin Dominos + 1x HFS. Coil tap on tone for the HFS. These Fralins sound awesome - like a meaty singlecoil without the hum. Much more strat-esque than the single coil tones from the 408s, by way of comparison. Thicker than a strat, not as gritty as a P90. Sound great both clean and with gain. Not sterile like some of the modern "noiseless single coils" or their ilk that I have played. And it's really cool to hear the HFS legitimately tapped!

Playability-wise she feels alot like my CEs (but with 2 less frets). Condition-wise, I'd rate her an EC overall. Just a few scratches on the top and back, nothing even remotely serious, and some expected pickguard wear. Headstock is 100% clean! Neck pocket is perfect, not even a sign of the beginnings of any sort of crack. I did not have the energy to perform a full BCS on a pickguard-equipped guitar tonight, but she indeed appears all original except for the strap locks. I will be searching for a set of appropriately patina'd original PRS strap buttons to make her like she was. Not sure if the pearloid buttons were an add-on by the previous owner. Diggin the 3-piece quilted maple top as well!

And a killer top to boot. Interesting is that it is a three piece top? Nice! Where did you find this one??

Thanks G-Man, it is a 3-piece top. I have seen a few CEs with 3-piece tops, but they seem to be more common on the EGs. She was from Reverb.com.

She does not look 24 years old at all. Ya olde cradle robber, you.

I swear, Dusty, she didn't look a day over 17...;)

I want one of these too, just waiting to find the right one.

I am off and on for literally about 2 years now. I knew I wanted Dominos (but wasn't sure about HSS or SSS) and a maple top. From what I have read, the neck pocket issues seemed to be most prevalent with the original EG design. The EGII seems quite similarly constructed to a CE (at least from the outside) although there does appear to be a bit of a more squarish surface to the side of the body around the neck pocket - overcompensation maybe? It's subtle. Anyway, I think this one is finally the right one for me.

BTW someone finally (as in 24 years ago finally I guess) has a push-pull that is easy to engage and doesn't feel like it's going to break. With the OE knobs and pots, it sits relatively high off the pickguard and is easy to grab. The S2 P/P on my Vela makes me want to install a mini-toggle. Hmmm...

Glad for you Sir Karl
it is really a vintage beauty, all you need now is to sip a bit of vintage wine
Enjoy

Nice!! I had an EGII for about 2 weeks, lol. It was cool, but I wanted to mod it and I'm already having a hard time starting my first project. I ended up selling it to a friend who's kid just started playing and needed a guitar for home (her dad bought her one but won't let her take it out of his house). Now she's totally on the PRS bandwagon (start them young!!) and wants to buy my 30th now, lol.

Cool score man! I like the quilty 3-piece as well. What's the neck pocket issue with these?

From what I gather from reading many different online sources (some dubiousity ensured) the neck pocket on the original design - with the less PRSey body shape - was not deep enough, causing neck shifting and stress / breakage on the body at the pocket. Indications were that this was resolved with the second-generation (EGII). Some folks had their necks glued in, etc.

Again, this is all on the Internet - so it must be true right? ;)

I should probably hit up the PTC folks for the real skinny.

I had seen a few where there appeared to be finish cracks on either side of the neck pocket, as if the headstock took a hit...jarring the neck pocket, but there are plenty of clean ones out there...and reasonably cheap, too!!
