I was very interested in purchasing my first PRS guitar, the McCarty 594. I decided on Double Cut but I also wanted to check out the Custom 22, 24, and Sky which I did. I love the different sound the Custom 24 brings to the table. Humbuckers are brighter and not as heavy as my Les Paul. All the toggle settings sound good and this guitar is the one with the most diverse sounds.
Out of all my tests and listening, I concluded the following:
All these PRS guitars are amazing in crsftmanship, consistency, the access on the neck, pickups, and features. I decided I would be equally happy with any of them. So how do you choose?
1. With your head: The bottom line is what guitars do you already have and which PRS would give you a different sound from what you already have? For me the answer is the Custom 24. I already have a Fender American Strat, Tele and Les Paul Custom.
2. With your Heart: The 594 McCarty just speaks to my heart. It excites me. I love seeing and playing it more than any other model. I'm more of a blues jazz player and this guitar just fits my style the most.
The bad news for my wallet is I know I will not be happy with just one PRS. I would also want the McCarty 594 just as much with its more even high, mids, lows compared to my Les Paul which has thicker lower mids.
I watched many videos when they compared the Les Paul to the 594. Most comparrions end with the conclusion that they are both great guitars. I like the classic Les Paul that Clapton, Page, and hundreds of others have played and recorded with. But at the same time the newer features and look on the 594 gives a modern flair that makes it unique and equally special.
