My cloudy Private Stock

Hi,

First of all, I'm new here. I'm Pete. I'm a big PRS fan. Over many years, I bought several PRSs, including some Private Stocks, ie, Paul's 28, Violin Guitar. I love the designs, craftsmanship, quality, the sound it rings.. to name a few. I currently live in Thailand, and the past several years I bought PRS guitars in USA, and had them hand-carried over to me.

The other day, I decided to go through my guitar collections that I acquired over past many years. I was shocked when I opened one of my Private Stock PRSs. It was cloudy all over the top and the back (Please see photos). I, then, opened all other guitars I have, esp, PRS. Luckily, all others remain in good condition as when I left them in the cases.

As soon as I could, I contacted PTC ([email protected], email I got from visiting PRS website after clicking PTC). I sent the photos of the back of the headstock, front and back of the guitar body to show the cloudy spots (well, not really spots, it's pretty much taken over the whole body). The first few emails we exchanged were basically "what's the serial numbers". I thought it was at the back of the headstock at the top, which a photo of it was sent in the first email. Anyway, the guy insisted that I told him the numbers. I eventually found the COA, scanned and sent to him.

Now the last reply is about that the cloudiness could happen from high humidities, high temperature, exposed to moisture. I have over 20 PRSs, and many of them have Poly finish just like this cloudy PS. They all sit in the cases in the same room. The last email also raised another problem that this PS has a Brazilian rosewood neck, and it was sold in USA, therefore, there was no CITES document. I'm a bit shocked here though. This PS guitar was made back in 2006 when Brazilian rosewood wasn't restricted yet, therefore, it, of course, wouldn't have such documents.

My question now is what do I do??? How do I get this ugly cloudy top fixed? It seems like the guy from PTC whom I exchanged massages with is advising he can't help, and so far I don't see the effort whether he was trying to help at all.

Can anyone please suggest? Can't PTC PRS really help? Honestly, I want a perfect job, and to me, this is PRS, I wish PRS will help me fix it.

Hello my old friend. Good to see you here. I assume PRS does not want to get involved with a CITES problem.........

Colortone makes a fine finishing compound that works for removing very light scratches / defects. I have used it. This might work for you Pete.

Hi Mark,
It’s been a long time! Thank you very much for your suggestion. But I think mayb the pictures can’t explain enough.. the cloudiness is under the clear coat. I think the only fix is a complete refinish. It’s a pity.

Btw, can the custom really tell what wood the neck is?

Customs might be able to tell ................... which would really suck!

I'm not an expert, but I don't think they have to be able to tell, they only have to suspect. I think it's up to the shipper to provide the documentation to allow it through.

Thank you.
Nonetheless, I don't quite understand since the guitar was made years before the BRW restrictions, why would customs still have problems with it?

Hey Pete! Long time! Sorry to hear of your problem. It’s a beautiful early PS.

How’s my old Paul’s 28?

Still in the case, but already checked if there was any problem with it.. as expected there shouldn't be any since it's nitro. This P28 has the best looking top of all I ever seen, too.. I'm so proud.. LOL

It's CITES it doenst have to make sense.

Good luck in your resolution. I have zero ideas. Beautiful guitars though.

oh.. really.. crap.. someone wanted to buy this guitar, that's why I opened the case to check it.. now how am I going to sell this???

Shipping to and from PRS will be within the USA, so they don't have to worry.

About Selling it, I was offered $6000 before finding out THIS!!

Thank you very much for your best offer.. LOL

Get another quote.

Id have a go with methylated spirits and a bottle of whisky, for free, if you pay shipping.

That sounds about right. I would.

I decided if it's really $1500, I would just keep it here, have it carried over there and back with the domestic shipping will already cost me more than $1,000. A friend already named this finish Cloudy Tortoise... I'll live with it, sad, but have to.

I beg to differ, Pete. The amber-colored Brazilian McCarty I sold you is the best-looking top of all time. :)

Hans, that's another great looking top PRS, too!

Oh...............so you're saying you're a better pusher than I am, huh?

:p:p:p

LOL
