My 11 year old son is in the downstairs shower and he has my Stevie Wonder CD cranked! I Wish is playing. I couldn't be happier.

Yes it is! He is in 5th grade and is doing very well with his trombone too.. Friday out of the blue he asked if we could go see Boston in concert. I didn't know he knew who Boston was.

Lucky! All I hear coming outta my 13 year old step-sons room these days is Eminem. *shaking head*

Nice. Reminded me of a few months ago when driving with my 21 year old son. A grateful dead song comes on called "Brown Eyed Woman" and he's singing every word. I ask him how he knows the song and giving me a funny look says "Dad, you've been playing and singing that on your guitar since I was a baby". Guess I did something right ;p

Really nice stories guys, thank you for sharing.
My wife is now pregnant and I dream of a son with good musical taste (or better, musical taste that I consider to be good ;-) )

My girlfriends son only listens to Lil Wayne (he has a huge boy crush on him I think... It's all he talks about), and occasionally 2pac.

At least my daughter is in to better music, she's been on a 90s alternative kick lately, but I still hear her rocking out to Hendrix, Skynyrd and Floyd

My 10 year old boy likes to rock out. In my car he either wants to play Rush, Dream Theater, AC/DC or Blue Oyster Cult. The only alarming musical interest so far is "Pokemon" soundtrack stuff.

My daughter and I both share the same taste in music . Black veil brides, motionless in white , Memphis May Fire, ice nine kills and Metallica . Makes it a lot better then when she used to change my CDs and put Justin Beiber in ....

I am learning about today's music through my kids. My 18 year old listens to John Mayer, and others like that (I happen to think JM is a great song writer and performer), and then some heavier stuff like Periphery(Spelling). My 16 year old wants to be a rap artist. We have now started to listen to Eminem. I have learned to appreciate rap a little because of his passion and writing his own songs. My 14 year old is more of a generalist. He started with Elvis when he was 9 or so. Loved Johnny Cash too. Now he listens to anything that makes him feel good. My tasters are rooted in classic rock (Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, and Van Halen....) and James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Eagles for starters. I would like to have the guitar skills of Joe Bonammasa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Via, Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons, Eddie Van Halen, and Eric Johnson., let alone Al Di Meola, Santana, and John McGlaughlen ....but my fingers don't seem to want to. but I can play a mean Beatles song :D

I didn't know Boston was still around. I saw them way back in 77. Sammy Hagar and the Red Rockets were the warm up act. They really got me inspired to jam on the guitar.

Sorry for drifting off topic. Here's to kids with good musical taste!

I wish I could say that flashes of good taste last, but it didn't for us.

When my son was about 8, I was listening to the audio of Zappa playing "Peaches En Regalia" on SNL. My son walked in and said, "That sounds like Frank Zappa, but with more guitar."

Now, his taste...ugh.

There wasn't hope for us, why should there be hope for them? ;)

So Gush, does your son play music yet?

I started him on drums when he was 7 and he can play but he lost interest in it. He plays trombone but we stand firm on practice everyday and it shows. He is doing very well and has a very good tone for a 5th grader.

He is just like I was. I hear him in his room figuring out songs by ear. He learned the star wars theme.

I think he will come back to drums. It will happen when he wants to impress girls.

The Mrs and I have no kids, but a buddy of mine had his "trained" right. When he was 3 (23 years ago) he could name all of the members of Kiss and Judas Priest. As a bonus, if you asked him, "Tony, little boy blue", he would respond "he needed the money." Now his old man just wishes he would move out of the house. He's still got great taste in music though.

Raising my son is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I take pride in teaching him to be a respectable young man. We have a thing in our house which is do a good deed every day and I ask him almost everydayvwhat his good deed was. I also teach him that if you screw with people enough times he could get knocked on his rear end.

We jam together and we ride motorcycles together. Sometimes we have ice cream for breakfast but above all else I teach him to be respectful.

One more thing, I tell him I love him every day. I also told him that I tell him these things because when I'm gone he will know exactly how I feel about him. He'll never have to wonder.

I still tell my kids I love them and they're all adults.

I'm not sure if it helps them at this stage of life, or not, but it helps me. ;)

No wonder he won't move out of the house. He probably has a hard time finding anyone his own age into Kiss or Judas Priest. ;)
